Highlights - St Mirren 0-0 St Johnstone

Highlights - St Mirren 0-0 St Johnstone

By Keir Murray

The meeting of the Saints in Paisley sounds grand enough but this end-of-season Scottish Premier League game was bereft of incident and entertainment.

St Johnstone keeper Peter Enckelman saved smartly from Michael Higdon when the visitors' defence was day-dreaming, then Higdon had a weak header saved.

Perth Saints' Dave MacKay tried his luck with a free-kick that was caught comfortably by Craig Samson.

And with minutes to go Liam Craig went close with a looping header.

This ought to have been a game when the players could express themselves, the threat of relegation removed by bottom side Hamilton's defeat in midweek.

Unfortunately, it had all the hallmarks of a meaningless kick-about.

Yet the game had plenty of significance for St Mirren defender John Potter: he is one of 10 players being released by the Buddies and was captaining the club for the last time.

St Johnstone were on a run of three straight wins after an 11-game stretch without a victory in the SPL and they knew at kick-off that eighth place in the table was definitely theirs.

They had, of course, been boosted by the news that manager Derek McInnes had turned down an offer to take his talents to Brentford.

There were no chances of note by the time the Perth Saints won a free-kick 30 yards out in the 17th minute.

But Craig's over-hit delivery, floating harmlessly past Samson's post, typified the lackadaisical nature of the opening exchanges.

Higdon had a great chance to snap the stadium from its somnolent state when he met Kenny McLean's lofted cross as the St Johnstone defence dreamt of building sandcastles on a foreign beach.

Luckily for them, goalkeeper Enckelman was alert and, as the big Buddies striker waited for his headed first touch to fall kindly, the Saints goalie advanced sharply and smothered the subsequent shot.

Just before half-time, Higdon headed a McLean cross into the lush turf and into the arms of a grateful Enckelman.

St Johnstone's Chris Millar tried a speculative shot from 25 yards that drifted a couple of feet wide of Samson's right-hand post.

And the Perth Saints maintained a more positive post-interval display when they forced a free-kick 25 yards from goal.

MacKay pinged it over the St Mirren wall but straight down the throat of Samson, who made an easy save.

At the other end, just a minute later, Higdon smacked a free-kick poker straight and out for a goal-kick when a degree of curl was required from wide on the left.

Steven Thomson hit a shot from 20 yards that looked goal-bound but it was deflected in the six-yard box for a St Mirren corner.

With an agonising 13 minutes to go, Higdon had the chance to lift the atmosphere when he lined up a free-kick in a central position 20 yards out.

His shot had plenty of power, certainly, but it rose from the moment of impact and rocketed high over the bar.

Millar sent a 30-yard crossfield ball on to the head of Craig in the dying minutes but his looping header from 12 yards failed to hit the target.

Potter was given a standing ovation by the St Mirren fans as he made way for Jim Goodwin, the last of the game's six substitutions.
