Inverness CT   1 - 0   St Mirren

Highlights - Inverness CT v St Mirren

Highlights - Inverness CT 1-0 St Mirren

Adam Rooney's late strike earned 10-man Inverness a deserved home win and leaves St Mirren facing a nervy end to their Scottish Premier League campaign.

Saints now lead bottom side Hamilton by only three points but Michael Higdon's shot was one of the few efforts that managed to test Caley's Jonny Tuffey.

Most chances fell to Inverness, with Alex MacDonald denied by Paul Gallacher and Rooney thrice hitting the woodwork.

Russell Duncan was sent off for retaliation before Rooney's clincher.

St Mirren were six points ahead of basement side Hamilton at kick-off and their goal difference was 10 better than Accies'.

But by half-time, with the match at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium goalless and with Hamilton leading Hibernian 1-0, that margin stood at four and Danny Lennon's team talk at the interval must have had an added sense of urgency.

The preceding 45 minutes offered little drama when compared to these teams' previous matches, where Caley Thistle had dented Celtic's title ambitions with a 3-2 win and St Mirren had lost to a late Accies goal in Paisley.

Inverness manager Terry Butcher made six changes to the team that upset Celtic, with captain Richie Foran back from suspension and Northern Ireland goalkeeper Tuffey's SPL debut among the changes.

For St Mirren, midfield stalwart Hugh Murray was a painful absence and Jure Travner was out following his red card against Hamilton. Full-back David Barron returned after a long-term injury to replace David van Zanten.

A quiet opening 10 minutes was marked only by a long-range free-kick by St Mirren's Kenny McLean, which flew over the bar.

Centre-forward Higdon had Paul McGowan and Craig Dargo for company up front for the visitors but too often the ball failed to stick, allowing Inverness to retain possession and pass the ball about.

However, Higdon did manage to escape the home defence in 13 minutes though he fired wide.

The first shot on target came from Inverness in the 26th minute when MacDonald was played through by on-loan Blackburn midfielder Aaron Doran.

One-on-one, the striker's shot was blocked by Gallacher and the rebound fell to Richie Foran - but he was unable to capitalise.

Before the break, Inverness full-back Kenny Gillet burst down the left wing before crossing to Eric Odhiambo, who headed wide.

Having witnessed few chances, the fans then had two to savour 10 minutes into the second half.

First, Tuffey saved a shot by Higdon, then within 30 seconds Gallacher denied Foran at the other end.

Though he had not scored since 16 March, Inverness striker Rooney deserves bags of praise for his 18 goals prior to kick-off this season.

And only the woodwork denied him adding to that tally when he rattled the crossbar with a wonderful overhead kick.

Tuffey saved a fierce shot from McGowan, then there was a moment of drama and poignancy when Caley Thistle's Duncan, in his 352nd appearance, was sent off for retaliating to a challenge by St Mirren's Lee Mair.

Duncan is one of the 10 players to be released by the club at the end of the season and the realisation that he would miss Wednesday's final home game, against Hibernian, seemed to dawn on him as he walked off the Inverness pitch for the last time.

Rooney, a second-half substitute for MacDonald, hit the woodwork twice more before he finally found the net, blasting a shot past Gallacher with five minutes remaining.

Pre-match Butcher said his club's aim was to finish on 50 points or more and to have a positive goal difference. He needs only one more win to reach the points haul and their goals account is in credit by five. They will finish in seventh place.

St Mirren's situation is much more grave. The defeat means they are only three points ahead of the Accies with two games to go.
