Hamilton   1 - 0   Hibernian

Highlights - Hamilton v Hibernian

Highlights - Hamilton 1-0 Hibernian

Hamilton have St Mirren in their sights in the Scottish Premier League relegation battle after securing their first home win of the season.

Nigel Hasselbaink's first-half strike settled an entertaining match at New Douglas Park.

Chances were rife as both sides set out with attacking intentions from the first whistle.

Hibs played more than 50 minutes with 10-men as Francis Dickoh was sent off for two bookable offences.

Hibs started strongly and almost opened the scoring through Akpo Sodje in four minutes. The Nigerian striker collected the ball with his back to goal on the corner of the penalty area, turned and fired a deflected shot just wide.

Just a minute later, Liam Miller squandered a golden chance to give his side the lead. Ricardo Vaz Te worked his way to the byeline and cut the ball back in front of goal to Miller, who managed to drag his shot wide from just eights yards out.

Hamilton's first chance arrived after 20 minutes as Dougie Imrie went clean through on Hibs keeper Jakub Divis. He tried to curl a left foot strike beyond the keeper, but his effort lacked power and was comfortably saved.

Imrie went close again five minutes later, getting his free-kick from 20 yards up and down over the wall and drawing a smart save from Divis.

The Hamilton forward looked certain to score on the half hour when James Chambers' cross found him free at the back post, but his first touch with his chest took him off balance and he could only direct his effort from six yards straight at Divis.

Hamilton were now in the ascendancy and Gary McDonald took the wrong option when free in the six-yard area, electing to nod David Buchanan's centre back across goal rather than looking to score himself.

Accies' pressure finally paid off when Hasselbaink broke the deadlock in the 38th minute.

Imrie's cross was half-cleared and Hasselbaink latched on to a McDonald knock-down and struck a smart finish on the turn to give his side the lead. Divis got a hand to the shot and may feel he could have kept it out.

Miller looked to respond five minutes later for the visitors, but he fired his shot high and wide after a well-timed burst into the box.

Colin Calderwood's men were left with an uphill task when they were reduced to 10-men two minutes before half-time.

Dickoh dived in with a wild challenge on Hasselbaink and, with the Ghanaian having been booked earlier, referee Mike Tumilty had no hesitation in sending the defender off.

Six minutes into the second half, some great wing-play by Ali Crawford almost brought a second Hamilton goal.

The youngster sped down the left flank before skipping inside David Wotherspoon and cracking a fierce shot at goal, which was palmed away by Divis.

Vaz Te raced on to a ball over the home defence and keeper Tomas Cerny hesitated before sliding in to challenge the Hibs striker in the penalty area. Cerny made no contact with the ball, but referee Tumilty judged Vaz Te had gone to ground too easily promptly booked the Portuguese striker for diving.

On the hour mark Hibs threatened again with Sodje advancing on Cerny, but Accies defender Mark McLaughlin intervened with a magnificent last-ditch challenge.

Good chances then came at both ends in the space of a few minutes.

Imrie did well to find Hasselbaink and he in turn slid in Crawford, who was forced a little wide but clipped a chipped finish over Divis, only to be denied by the crossbar.

Hibs broke straight up the park and Vaz Te played a clever one-two with Miller before lashing a fizzing drive from the edge of the box just wide of Cerny's post.

It was end-to-end stuff now and Hamilton went close again through Hasselbaink. The Dutchman picked up the ball 40 yards from goal and drove into the Hibs penalty box.

Despite Crawford in acres of space to his left, he chose to go alone and his shot went just wide.

Hibs again threatened immediately and Vaz Te cut in from the right, but his left-foot strike brought only a routine save from Cerny.

Crawford had a glorious chance to double Hamilton's advantage when he was left one-on-one with Divis after an Imrie through ball, but the keeper saved with his feet to keep Hibs in it.

Imrie was at the heart of most of Hamilton's attacking play and with six minutes left he drew in the Hibs defence before laying the ball off for Mark Carrington, but the substitute blasted over from eight yards.

Carrington had another chance to secure the points in the 90th minute when he danced by two challenges, but his weak finish was easily saved by Divis.

The Hibs stopper had to show more athleticism to keep out Crawford's 93rd minute drive, leaping to his right to make an excellent one-handed save.

Billy Reid's side saw out the match with relative ease to make it game-on in the relegation battle.
