Dundee United moved to within eight points of third-place Hearts after overcoming St Johnstone in the Scottish Premier League.
St Johnstone played the majority of the match with 10 men after Steven Anderson picked up two early bookings.
And the visitors fell behind to Johnny Russell's controversial opener just before the break, Saints claiming the United striker was offside.
David Robertson fired home United's second late on.
St Johnstone drop below Hibernian in the table, while United have six games to catch Hearts, including a meeting of the two sides after the league split into two sections.
Anderson was booked in the opening minute for a heavy challenge on Danny Swanson and the St Johnstone defender escaped a second caution after another penalised challenge on the same player minutes later.
But Anderson was given his marching orders when his third foul on Swanson was punished with a second yellow and subsequently a red card.
The visitors regrouped with stopper Graham Gartland coming on for striker Peter MacDonald and, after winning a free-kick, Danny Grainger's shot was palmed over by United goalkeeper Dusan Pernis.
The 10 men continued to press and Murray Davidson's well-struck shot was pushed round the post by Pernis.
Russell opened the scoring for United just before half-time
United almost took the lead when Swanson met Craig Conway's cross with a downward header and Saints goalkeeper Graeme Smith reacted well to make the save.
Pernis had been beaten in midweek by a deflected Chris Humphrey goal for Motherwell, but the keeper avoided a similar fate when he got back to clutch the ball after Danny Invincibile's effort looped up in the air off a United defender.
Russell sprung well to get a head on to Paul Dixon's cross, but the in-form striker could not direct the attempt on target.
However, Russell was more successful when he ran on to a deflected Swanson shot and leisurely rounded Smith to knock the ball into the net.
The St Johnstone players were furious the goal was allowed to stand, believing Russell to have been offside, and visiting manger Derek McInnes was sent to the stand after coming out of his technical area.
The second half was a much more sedate affair with Saints exhibiting patience in the hope of nicking a goal.
Invincibile carved out a shot that bounced awkwardly in front of Pernis, the United keeper adjusting well to block.
Further unsuccessful efforts came in from Collin Samuel and Grainger as Saints continued to probe.
David Goodwillie headed over the St Johnstone bar from Conway's cross.
Robertson came on for Morgaro Gomis and sealed the points for the home side, arriving late to convert Goodwillie's cross.
St Johnstone's hopes of a consolation goal were dashed by Pernis's save to deny Davidson moments before full-time.
