St Johnstone   1 - 1   Hibernian

St Johnstone and Hibs had to settle for a share of the spoils after an entertaining second half at McDiarmid Park

St Johnstone lost their seven-game home stretch without conceding a goal and Hibs' run of five wins came to a halt as the points were shared in Perth.

A strange own goal from Richie Towell fired the home side in front early in the second half.

However, Hibs, who were dismal in a drab first half, responded well with debutant Ricardo Vaz Te lively.

And David Wotherspoon levelled on 80 minutes, hammering the ball home from close range.

The draw leaves both teams locked on 32 points, two points behind seventh-placed Dundee United in the Scottish Premier League.

The Hibs team has beefed up considerably since manager Colin Calderwood re-shaped his squad in January but the visitors were bullied off the ball throughout a first half bereft of thrills.

There was a distinct lack of composure from both sides, although the home outfit were a yard sharper and played with greater aggression in all areas of the park.

Saints' Murray Davidson was the pick of the midfielders, winning several strong tackles and always playing with his head up.

St Johnstone shelled a lot of early long balls in the direction of Hibs full-backs Callum Booth and Towell but the teenagers coped with the pressure without too much trouble.

After 20 minutes, nice play on the wing by Collin Samuel saw the ball eventually fall to Jamie Adams, but the Saints midfielder hastily fresh-aired his shot and a decent chance was gone.

Eight minutes from the interval, St Johnstone left-back Danny Grainger tried his luck with a shot that dropped perfectly for Samuel after a couple of ricochets off defenders.

However, the striker hurried his shot on the turn from eight yards and hit the ball straight at goalkeeper Mark Brown.

Vaz Te made a difference to the Hibs attack after the interval

Former Bolton forward Vaz Te made his Hibs bow at half-time but the visiting fans had little time to admire the new arrival's shiny gold boots before they were wailing in anguish at falling behind in bizarre circumstances.

Peter MacDonald hooked the ball over his shoulder into the penalty and Towell made a complete mess of his attempted clearance, lashing the ball into his own net.

Buoyed by the goal, MacDonald flashed a 22-yard drive inches past Brown's left-hand post.

Vaz Te injected some urgency into the Hibs ranks and from his cross Paul Hanlon headed wide.

The Portuguese then latched on to a poor kick-out from St Johnstone keeper Peter Enckleman but his first-time effort from 45 yards bobbled inches wide of an empty net.

More good work from Vaz Te set up a shooting opportunity for Akpo Sodje, although the big striker could only drill the ball straight at Enckleman from 18 yards.

The Finnish goalkeeper was soon gathering a powerful effort from Towell before Saints sub Andy Jackson speared a shot on the volley narrowly off target.

St Johnstone appeared to have weathered the Hibs storm, with the match getting rather scrappy, when Wotherspoon struck against his home-town club to level matters.

With 10 minutes remaining, the ball fell to the Scotland U21 international in a crowded penalty box and the youngster smashed the ball into the net, via the underside of the crossbar.

There was time for Jackson to demonstrate great technique and crack a sweet volley narrowly wide but neither side could find a late winner.
