St Mirren   3 - 3   Inverness CT

St Mirren v Inverness CT

Highlights - St Mirren 3-3 Inverness CT

By Clive Lindsay

Adam Rooney scored twice, but neither his Inverness side nor St Mirren could end their long runs without a league win after a thriller at St Mirren Park.

Rooney pounced on slack defending to prod in the opener after six minutes, but Michael Higdon equalised from the penalty spot after 28 minutes.

Steven Thomson fired St Mirren ahead 60 seconds later, only for Aaron Doran to poke in a reply four minutes later.

Rooney slotted in on 61 minutes, but Darren McGregor headed in a reply.

Both sides had gone into the game on the back of victories that took them into the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup but seeking their first league wins of 2011.

And St Mirren have now gone eight Scottish Premier League games since claiming all three points, while Caley Thistle's winless run has lasted three games longer.

The Buddies went into the game with the more settled side, Hugh Murray replacing the suspended Jim Goodwin in midfield.

With 10 of his players either injured or suspended, Inverness manager Terry Butcher was only able to fill four of the available seven places on his side's substitute's bench.

Winger Jonny Hayes recovered from an ankle problem, with Ryan Esson, Chris Innes and David Proctor also coming back into the starting line-up.

Ross Tokely was missing from the defence along with the injured Graeme Shinnie, while goalkeeper Jonny Tuffey and striker Eric Odhiambo dropped to the bench, but it was Caley Thistle who got off to a flying start.

Hayes had volleyed from just inside the box and Rooney had mis-hit a shot on the turn from 10 yards, both straight at Paul Gallacher, before the goalkeeper was eventually beaten.

A long, high ball from visiting keeper Ryan Esson bounced in front of the St Mirren defence and Rooney used his strength to roll marker Darren McGregor and poke it into the net from 12 yards.

St Mirren gradually worked their way into the game and missed a great chance to equalise after 25 minutes.

David van Zanten sent Thomson clear inside the box and, when the midfielder's low drive was diverted skywards by Esson's outstretched hand, it shaved the hairline of in-rushing striker Higdon and Murray stabbed the loose ball off the outside of the post from eight yards.

Caley Thistle's personnel problems deepened when Hayes had to go off injured, to be replaced with Odhiambo, with what looked like a recurrence of his ankle injury.

The Buddies' probing immediately paid off when Dargo shook off the close attentions of three markers before being pulled down by Proctor.

Higdon sent Esson the wrong way from the penalty spot and, within a minute, St Mirren were ahead.

Dargo was the one causing problems again and, when he controlled a long ball with his back to goal and played it into the path of Thomson, the little midfielder rifled his 20-yard drive into the far corner of the net.

Inverness momentarily looked shell-shocked but were level again after their next ball into home penalty area.

St Mirren failed to deal with a Proctor cross and, after it deflected off Rooney, team-mate Doran prodded the ball past Gallacher from 12 yards for his first goal since arriving from Blackburn Rovers on loan.

The home side made a change at the break, with Jure Travner replacing Lee Mair as the Paisley side switched to a three-man defence, and Caley Thistle were soon under pressure.

They were lucky to remain level when McGregor rose to meet a Travner corner and, after the ball came off the face of the crossbar, Foran headed against his own post from close range in his attempt to clear.

However, Caley Thistle broke to regain the lead against the run of play when Foran's fine, weighted through ball put Rooney clear and he fired low past Gallacher into the far corner.

Both sides pressed for a winner and only a superb, instinctive save on the line by Esson denied McGregor a second goal when the defender powered a 16-yard header towards goal from another Travner corner.
