Motherwell   4 - 0   St Johnstone

Highlights - Motherwell 4-0 St Johnstone

Highlights - Motherwell 4-0 St Johnstone

A first-half hat-trick from Nick Blackman helped Motherwell to victory against an out of sorts St Johnstone.

Blackman opened the scoring tapping home Jamie Murphy's cross before netting a second with a similar finish from Chris Humphrey's pull-back.

The on-loan Blackburn man grabbed his hat-trick with another tap-in from Stevie Hammell's free kick.

Saints were having trouble creating and John Sutton piled on the misery, lashing the ball home late on.

Motherwell manager Craig Brown made two changes to the side which beat Inverness with Murphy and Marc Fitzpatrick coming in for Alan Gow and Steven Saunders.

Scott Dobie made his first SPL start for the visitors as Saints rang the changes following three defeats in a row.

Dobie was joined in the Saints starting eleven by Peter Enckelman, Cleveland Taylor, Steven Anderson and Danny Grainger, who returned from suspension.

Graeme Smith, Chris Millar, Andy Jackson and the injured Murray Davidson dropped out of the squad with Kevin Rutkiewicz was demoted to the bench.

The visitors had the first real effort on goal after a quiet opening spell when left-back Grainger blasted in a free-kick which fizzed past Darren Randolph's post.

However, shortly after, Motherwell took the lead when Tom Hateley released Murphy on the right and Blackman tapped the ball past Enckelman from close range.

Well, keeper Darren Randolph had to be alert to save a deflected Taylor effort and then collect from Mark Reynolds, after the defender headed Jody Morris' cross towards his own goal.

The game was fairly open, with the home side probably edging the play, but neither set of forwards managed to free themselves of defenders to create a clear opportunity.

However, Blackman was always looking dangerous and, when Humphrey beat Grainger for pace, the English striker saw his initial shot blocked, but was on hand to tap the rebound home.

Worse followed for the Saints when defender Dave MacKay gave away a free kick at the edge of the box.

The visiting defence failed to deal with the delivery from Hammell and Blackman was on hand to drive the ball over the line following some pinball in the Saints box.

The second half opened with Motherwell still on top and Humphrey blazed over after a mazy run past a host of Saints defenders.

Liam Craig passed up a rare opportunity for Saints, but put his long-range effort comfortably off target.

Enckelman saw a yellow card after taking down Humphrey who was one-on-one with the keeper, but referee Crawford Allan decided that Saints defenders were close enough to have intervened.

Then Michael Duberry, scorer of an own goal against Kilmarnock at the weekend, almost put the ball past Enckelman as he fought off the attentions of Motherwell substitute Esteban Casagolda.

Randolph finally had to make a save as substitute Collin Samuel headed towards goal, but Randolph was equal to the effort.

The visitors continued to struggle to create as the match wore on with Well happy to see things become scrappy.

But there was a sting in the tail for Saints as substitute Sutton rifled home after Alan Gow's shot was blocked.

Victory for Well cemented their grip on third place, but a third three-nil defeat in a row for Saints leaves manager Derek McInnes with plenty to think about.
