Dundee Utd   1 - 2   St Mirren

Highlights - Dundee Utd 1-2 St Mirren

Highlights - Dundee Utd 1-2 St Mirren

Michael Higdon struck twice as St Mirren moved off the bottom of the Scottish Premier League with a win against a lacklustre Dundee United.

Gareth Wardlaw and Sean Lynch both missed with close range headers in the first half but Higdon fired the visitors ahead with an angled strike.

With 65 minutes gone, Higdon finished off a swift counter-attack with a fine volley from a Paul McGowan delivery.

Prince Buaben fired in a late free kick but United could not find a leveller.

The home side were seeking to build on victories over Hibernian and Hamilton, but in a limp display failed to test Saints goalkeeper Craig Samson until Buaben's late strike and suffered a third home loss of the campaign.

St Mirren, who move up to ninth spot, were the hungrier side throughout, with Higdon and strike partner Wardlaw putting in tireless shifts.

The visitors should have taken the lead when Wardlaw connected with an excellent Jure Travner cross but could only head into the side netting.

Scott Robertson fired narrowly over from 25 yards for United, before Higdon's backwards header looped high and off target.

Saints were forced into a change after 30 minutes, with Lynch replacing Hugh Murray, who appeared groggy after a clash of heads.

But the change in personnel did not impact on the visitors, as Higdon capitalised on a defensive error to put them in front.

Sean Dillon slipped and missed a long ball forward and Higdon took possession before tucking a clinical finish into the bottom right corner from 12 yards.

Soon after, Lynch headed over after McGowan had picked out his team-mate from a set-piece.

United striker David Goodwillie, who had scored in the previous six matches, then had a header held by Samson before Saints struck for a second time.

McGowan did well to keep the ball in play on the right, hit an accurate, deep cross which Garry Kenneth misjudged and Higdon, with time and space, controlled the ball on his thigh before powering it beyond United goalkeeper Dusan Pernis from 16 yards.

Samson had to look sharp to push away a flighted effort from home substitute Johnny Russell but was beaten all ends up by Buaben's sizzler on 85 minutes.

John Potter was booked for a cynical challenge as Russell raced forward and the Ghanian powered the resulting 30-yard free-kick into the top corner.

However, the Paisley side held United at bay in three minutes of added time as the visitors claimed a deserved win.
