Goodwillie scored the only goal of the game with a predatory strike
By Thomas McGuigan
David Goodwillie's late strike secured victory for Dundee United to leave Colin Calderwood still looking for his first win as Hibernian manager.
Hibs midfielder John Rankin saw his penalty saved by Dusan Pernis after Prince Buaben had been penalised for a clumsy challenge on Danny Galbraith.
Derek Riordan spurned a couple of decent chances for the visitors.
And Goodwillie made Hibs pay for their profligacy, latching onto Danny Swanson's long ball to fire home.
Both sides traded possession frequently in a scrappy opening 20 minutes with little in the way of goalmouth action.
United almost took the lead with their first meaningful attack in the 21st minute, when Jon Daly's bullet header was cleared on the line by the alert Rankin.
That chance gave the game a much-needed jolt and Riordan played a neat one-two with Lewis Stevenson before screwing a shot wide of Pernis's goal.
On the half-hour mark United defender Garry Kenneth lashed a 35-yard shot well wide of goal as the hosts looked to pierce the Hibs rearguard.
Morgaro Gomis found himself in space wide on the left 10 minutes before the break but his rasping drive failed to trouble Hibs keeper Mark Brown.
Riordan then spurned a great chance to break the deadlock, taking a superb pass from Edwin De Graaf but his effort lacked conviction and was easily gathered by Pernis.
Moments before the break Brown produced a great double save to deny Goodwillie and then block Daly's close-range header.
If the closing stages of the first half were entertaining, the second half failed to capture the imagination.
Neither side looked convincing, Goodwillie lashing a great chance wide and Riordan slipping inside the box at the other end as he was about to pull the trigger.
Hibs were given a great chance to break the deadlock when they were awarded a penalty after Buaben clumsily pushed Galbraith in the box.
Rankin fired his spot-kick straight at Pernis, who saved well before Goodwillie lashed the ball to safety.
United scored a late winner when Goodwillie chased down Swanson's long pass and steered the ball under Brown and into the net.
