St Johnstone   2 - 1   St Mirren

Andy Jackson
Andy Jackson scored for St Johnstone after just three minutes

St Johnstone crept off the bottom of the Scottish Premier League table with a valuable home win against St Mirren.

Andy Jackson fired the hosts into a third minute lead but was later stretchered off after a clash with St Mirren keeper Paul Gallacher.

Sam Parkin headed the hosts two up but Sean Lynch's deflected effort gave the visitors hope before the break.

Jodie Morris could have put the match beyond the Buddies late in the second half, but Lee Mair stood in his way.

Jennison Myrie-Williams made his St Johnstone debut as Derek McInnes made six changes in a bid to register the Perth side's first league win of the season.

Parkin set up strike partner Jackson to give the home side their early lead.

The game was held up for six minutes midway through the half as Jackson was stretchered off with a head injury.

Gallacher accidentally caught the striker after rushing off his line to punch away Dave Mackay's long ball and Morris fired wide as his team-mate appeared to lay unconscious in the penalty box.

Collin Samuel came on but his side almost lost their lead immediately when Lynch lobbed the ball into the six-yard box following a half-cleared corner, however Enckelman stopped Lee Mair's header right on his line.

St Johnstone went two ahead in the 33rd minute when Parkin headed home.

Myrie-Williams exchanged passes with Maybury before sending in a driven cross that Parkin expertly guided into the far corner from 15 yards.

Myrie-Williams should have put the game beyond the Paisley Saints in the 36th minute when John Potter failed to deal with a long ball to leave the winger with a clear run on goal, but his left-footed effort allowed Gallacher to block with his foot.

The visitors took full advantage of the let-off within seconds when the ball fell for Lynch 30 yards out. He powerfully struck a first-time effort and saw it take a major deflection before nestling in the corner of the net.

Gareth Wardlaw missed a great chance to level in the 45th minute when the ball fell invitingly for the former Cowdenbeath striker six yards out following Hegarty's cross, but he sliced well wide.

St Johnstone calmed the match down after the break and Murray Davidson headed just over after an instant cross from Maybury.

Wardlaw's afternoon grew more frustrating when he was booked by referee John McKendrick after being caught by a dangerous high challenge from Liam Craig, with the free-kick going the home side's way.

With 20 minutes remaining, Morris fired for goal, but Mair blocked.

Saints continued to press forward in search of another goal, with Myrie-Williams keen to impress the home support, but the fans were happy to settle for three points and a narrow home win.
