Rangers   3 - 3   Motherwell

Rangers celebrate with the SPL trophy
Rangers were presented with the SPL trophy after the game

By Clive Lindsay

Two stoppage-time goals gave Motherwell a draw that spoiled Rangers' title party but was not enough to win the visitors fourth place in the table.

Kris Boyd's superb turn and shot opened the scoring after 17 minutes and Kyle Lafferty volleyed Rangers' second.

Jamie Murphy fired a reply five minutes after the break and Lafferty stabbed in Rangers' third after 70 minutes.

Steve Jennings headed home and Lukas Jutkiewicz scored from the spot after Neil Alexander challenged Murphy.

The final whistle signalled the start of Rangers' official championship party and left Motherwell relying on a Dundee United win in the Scottish Cup final to qualify for next season's Europa League.

Boyd was back in Rangers' starting line-up ahead of the Scotland striker's expected move to English football, with Rangers seemingly unable to match his wage demands.

Alexander continued in goal after the injury that forced him off the bench to replace Allan McGregor in the early stages of Tuesday's defeat by Celtic.

He looked a bag of nerves for the Glasgow derby. But, with Sasa Papac and Kirk Broadfoot returning in defence, he was more assured against a Motherwell side who started the game looking emotionally and physically drained by their thrilling Wednesday comeback to draw 6-6 with Hibernian.

Manager Craig Brown admitted before kick-off that his decision to play Mark Reynolds despite illness had been a mistake and the defender, who wants a move from Fir Park this summer, was left out this time.

If Motherwell thought their re-structured defence would be given some respite by a Rangers team in party mode, they were quickly dispelled as goalscoring full-back Steven Whittaker threatened the crossbar with a trademark drive from 25 yards.

David Weir, looking to complete a whole season of playing every minute of every game for Rangers this season at the tender age of 39, should have done better than head a few yards wide after rising above the opposing defence to meet a corner.

The opener was not long in coming, with Boyd gathering a pass from Steven Davis with his back to goal before holding off Steven Saunders and spinning to drive the ball low into the far corner from 16 yards.

Boyd's strike partner, Kenny Miller, should have added to Motherwell's misery but had a fresh-air shot in front of goal.

Jutkiewicz squandered a great chance to equalise when he rose to meet Jim O'Brien's fine cross but headed over from six yards.

The on-loan Everton striker had the ball in the net from a similar move but was rightly pulled up for offside.

However, it was Rangers who continued to be the more threatening and Miller forced John Ruddy into a fine save with a low drive and Lafferty sliced wide when found in the clear 12 yards out.

The Northern Ireland forward made no mistake, however, when he stole in front of Tom Hateley to stab home a volley from 10 yards following a fine Steven Naismith cross.

Jutkiewicz immediately stabbed an effort wide at the other end, but it was Rangers well on top by the time the half-time whistle blew.

Motherwell came out with more purpose after the break and Giles Coke's head deflected a Hateley free-kick wide of the far post.

A Naismith drive stung the fingers of Ruddy at the other end, but it was Motherwell who were now the dominant force and they pulled one back six minutes after the break.

Murphy, who had dropped to the bench but came on as a half-time substitute for the man who started ahead of him, Michael McGlinchey, side-footed home after being set up on the edge of the box following a mazy O'Brien run.

Rangers were stung into action and Boyd's powerful effort was deflected over the crossbar off goalkeeper Ruddy's thigh.

A fine, one-handed save by Alexander prevented Jutkiewicz equalising after the striker was put through on goal by Murphy.

However, the introduction of substitute Nacho Novo introduced new impetus for Rangers and his low cross was touched on by Boyd and finished off by the unmarked Lafferty at the far post.

Motherwell looked to be heading for defeat until Jennings headed home at the second attempt after Weir's poor clearance following a fine Alexander save.

Alexander's misery was complete when a penalty was given for his challenge on Murphy, although there looked to be little if any contact, and Jutkiewicz slotted home the resulting penalty.
