Hamilton v St Mirren

Highlights - Hamilton 0-0 St Mirren

By Stevie Miller

Both sides served up end-of-season fare in a scrappy Scottish Premier League encounter at New Douglas Park.

Marco Paixao provided a rare bright spark with a 40-yard shot which hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced towards the line but no goal was given.

Stephen O'Donnell passed up the best chance for the visitors in the first half, shooting wide from a tight angle.

Mark McLaughlin had to clear a Michael Higdon effort off the line, but neither team could force a goal.

St Mirren boss Gus MacPherson made four changes to his side, with the Buddies all but safe from relegation.

Goalkeeper Mark Howard made his first appearance for a year, with Lee Mair, Garry Brady and Higdon recalled and only five substitutes on the bench.

Accies manager Billy Reid named an unchanged side as they looked for a fifth win on the bounce in their last home game of the season.

Howard was almost immediately called into action when Flavio Paixao attempted a chip from a tight angle, but the St Mirren man managed to divert the ball across the face of the goal.

Flavio's twin brother Marco then tried an audacious effort from 40 yards, but his tremendous effort cannoned down off the crossbar and was adjudged not to have crossed the line.

O'Donnell burst past the Accies defence from a Billy Mehmet knock-down, but he flashed his half-volley past the post.

Flavio Paixao then tried to test Howard again with another shot from a tight angle at the edge of the box, but hit the side netting when perhaps he should have crossed the ball.

Alex Neil and St Mirren attacker Higdon both saw yellow after clashing following a Higdon foul on the Accies captain.

A game which many expected to have an end-of-season feel developed a niggly edge as both sides went into some very competitive challenges.

The home support shouted for a penalty as Dougie Imrie went down under a John Potter challenge, but the Buddies defender looked to have won the ball.

Accies then carved out an opportunity from a Marco Paixao free-kick at the edge of the box, but Martin Canning's header flew over the bar.

Higdon managed to beat goalkeeper Sean Murdoch after breaking into the Hamilton box, but McLaughlin got back to clear the shot off the line.

Murdoch then had to look smart to parry from Higdon's close-range header after a fine cross from on-loan full-back Graham Carey.

Hamilton's combative midfielder Simon Mensing did find himself with the ball in the St Mirren box, but Steven Robb managed to charge his shot down.

Set pieces were providing the main source of scoring opportunities, and James McArthur volleyed in an effort following a clearance from a Hamilton corner, but his shot spun off target.

Higdon headed straight at Murdoch with the goal at his mercy following a Robb cross as both sides searched for what would increasingly look like a winner, but it failed to materialise.
