St Johnstone   1 - 1   Aberdeen

St Johnstone v Aberdeen

Highlights - St Johnstone 1-1 Aberdeen

By Andy Campbell

St Johnstone claimed a draw with Aberdeen thanks to a last-minute own goal by goalkeeper Stuart Nelson.

Saints' Dave MacKay had a shot cleared off the line by Sone Aluko before Aberdeen's Steven MacLean opened the scoring with a goal-line flick.

MacLean hit the crossbar as the Dons finished the first half strongly.

The hosts pushed for a late leveller and were rewarded when Andy Jackson's shot hit the post and ricocheted back into the net off the arm of Nelson.

Despite only claiming a point, Aberdeen ended any lingering doubts about their Scottish Premier League safety by ensuring they will not finish bottom, while the Perth side bolstered their position in seventh.

St Johnstone began brightly and had several chances to score in the opening two minutes.

Chris Millar drew a save from Nelson with a powerful drive and, from the resulting corner, Murray Davidson threatened in the air, Dave MacKay had a shot cleared off the line by Sone Aluko and Jody Morris ended the attack with a low shot wide of right-hand post.

The presence and pace of Collin Samuel was causing the Dons' defence problems and the striker flashed a shot past the post after skipping away from a couple of challenges.

After weathering the early storm, Aberdeen took a surprise lead just after the quarter-hour mark.

Davide Grassi's header from Paul Marshall's corner was tipped on to the bar by goalkeeper Graeme Smith and headed back towards goal by Darren Mackie to MacLean, whose flick carried the ball over the line and into the net.

Falling behind knocked the hosts somewhat off their stride and they struggled to find the kind of space in the Aberdeen box that they had enjoyed earlier in the game.

Samuel's route to goal was blocked by some determined defending by Stuart Duff and Derek Young.

And the visitors may have added to their lead with a series of chances in the closing stages of the first half, starting with Aluko dragging a shot wide after cutting in from the right.

MacLean was proving to be a thorn in St Johnstone's side and the on-loan Plymouth man rattled the crossbar with a volley minutes before having a fierce drive deflected wide by Danny Grainger.

Grassi headed wide, as did St Johnstone captain Kevin Rutkiewicz at the other end before the break.

Aluko came to Aberdeen's rescue again at the start of the second half when he blocked Rutkiewicz's header on the line.

Saints continued to apply the pressure while Aberdeen looked to hit the home side on the break.

Millar curled a shot into the arms of Nelson, who had replaced regular keeper Jamie Langfield in the starting line-up, and made further saves to deny substitutes Jackson and Kenny Deuchar.

However, Nelson's hopes of a shut-out were dashed when his save from Liam Craig's free-kick fell to Jackson, who forced the ball into the net via the post and the keeper.
