Dundee Utd striker Goodwillie nets young player award

Dundee United's David Goodwillie

Why Goodwillie is top Young Player

Dundee United's David Goodwillie has been named the Clydesdale Bank Premier League young player of the season.

The Scotland Under-21 striker has enjoyed his best-ever campaign at Tannadice, scoring eight league goals.

"I was surprised to find out because I hadn't won any young player of the month awards this season. It was a nice bonus," Goodwillie told BBC Scotland.

"Our season's been brilliant. Hopefully we continue to win and have a Scottish Cup final to look forward to."

Goodwillie's impressive form has helped United seal a final appearance against Ross County and a spot in next term's Europa League.

This season has been better than I could've imagined

"This season has been better than I could've imagined," the 21-year-old said.

"I always believed United were going to be my club but just wondered when I'd be ready (for the first team). I'm ready now."

And the young striker was keen to praise the two managers he has worked under this season: Craig Levein, now Scotland manager and Peter Houston, who succeeded Levein on an interim basis.

Goodwillie surprised to win award

"Craig Levein was brilliant. He was the one who kind of made me, calmed me down a little bit and Houstie is kind of polishing me up," Goodwillie said.

"I was always excited and up for a laugh but now I maybe take it a bit more seriously now.

"The managers are quite similar because they've worked with each other for years, so there isn't much change."

Hibernian striker Anthony Stokes

Stokes scores goal of the season

Hibernian striker Anthony Stokes won the Goal of the Season award for his strike against Rangers at Ibrox last November.

The 22-year-old showed a great piece of individual skill, controlling the ball at the edge of the box using both feet before lifting the ball over Allan McGregor on the volley.

And Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc was awarded the Save of the Season, for a wonderful reflex save during the match against Hibernian at Easter Road in August.

David Wotherspoon hit a 30-yard strike which looked to have the keeper beaten, but at full-stretch Boruc got a right hand to it and pushed it onto the far post.
