Rangers dominate Player of Year award

Rangers dominate Scotland's Player of the Year contest, with all four nominees on the books at Ibrox.

David Weir, Kris Boyd, Steven Davis and Andy Webster, who is on loan at Dundee United, are vying for the award.

Rangers are on course to defend their Scottish Premier League title and have won the Co-operative Insurance Cup.

Rangers' Danny Wilson is in the running for best young player, along with David Goodwillie (Dundee Utd), Anthony Stokes (Hibs) and Leigh Griffiths (Dundee).

The winners will be announced on 2 May.

Boyd became the SPL's all-time leading goalscorer this season and has found the net on 22 occasions so far, while Weir, who turns 40 next month, has been a virtual ever-present at the heart of the Rangers defence.

MY SPORT: DEBATE

"I'm quite a harsh critic of myself," said Weir. "I always think I could be doing better.

"Defenders are a bit like that, we always remember the errors."

Northern Ireland international Davis has turned in a number of impressive displays in midfield and is the boomakers' favourite to land the prize, won by Celtic's Scott Brown last year.

"It's obviously massive to get nominated by the players you are up against week-in, week-out," said Davis.

"It's probably been my best season in terms of consistency."

Webster has put two years of injury troubles behind him with an excellent season at United, which has earned him a Scotland recall and the captaincy during his temporary stay at Tannadice.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed playing in a good side, with good professionals and getting a regular run of games has been a big bonus for me," explained the defender.

In the young player category, Stokes, Goodwillie and Griffiths have been finding the net regularly, while teenager Wilson has excelled beside Weir in the Rangers defence.

The nominees in the Scottish Football League are as follows:

SFL 1

Michael Gardyne - Ross County
Leigh Griffiths - Dundee
Gary Harkins - Dundee
Adam Rooney - Inverness Caley Thistle

SFL 2

Rory McAllister - Brechin
Paul McQuade - Cowdenbeath
Bryan Prunty - Alloa
Gareth Wardlaw - Cowdenbeath

SFL 3

Barry Douglas - Queen's Park
Liam Fox - Livingston
James Stevenson - East Stirling
Robbie Winters - Livingston
