Aberdeen   2 - 2   Dundee Utd

Dundee United celebrate
Jon Daly (second left) netted twice for Dundee United

By Fraser Gibson

Aberdeen rallied from two goals down to salvage a draw against Dundee United after a four-goal first half.

Jon Daly's thumping strike put the visitors ahead on eight minutes and the striker extended his side's advantage with a 24th-minute header.

However, Zander Diamond narrowed the deficit just after the half-hour mark from Charlie Mulgrew's delivery.

Michael Paton levelled matters from the penalty spot on half-time after Sean Dillon fouled Stuart Duff.

Aberdeen had started brightly, keen to end their 10-game winless run, but United took the lead when hesitant defending allowed Daly to stride forward and unleash a powerful shot past Langfield.

Home manager Mark McGhee fumed as he claimed Daly had fouled Diamond in the build-up, however referee Iain Brines saw nothing wrong.

Peter Houston's side looked to press home their advantage and Morgaro Gomis and Prince Buaben combined to set up Craig Conway, who dragged a shot wide.

Danny Swanson had a good chance to extend the lead when he was set free on the edge of the Aberdeen box on a quick break, but the midfielder fired over the bar.

However, the midfielder did better when he swung the ball into the box from a free-kick on the right touchline and Daly rose to power home a header.

Aberdeen showed they were not about to give up meekly as Mulgrew curled in a free-kick to the back post and Diamond powerfully into the net.

On the brink of half-time the home side were level when Dillon knocked over Duff in the box. Brines pointed to the spot and Paton stepped up to beat Dusan Pernis to the keeper's left.

Both sides looked eager to forge a path to three points in the opening exchanges of the second half and dogged Aberdeen defending shut out United before Gomis volleyed just wide.

As the game bubbled along, David Goodwillie embarked on a tenacious run and squared to strike partner Daly inside the box, but Langfield was out quickly to save well.

United thought they had taken the lead again when Mihael Kovacevic swung a ball in from right and Garry Kenneth headed past Langfield, but assistant referee John Gilmour had his flag up for offside.

Pumped-up Aberdeen searched for a goal that would avoid them equalling their worst run of results in the club's history - 11 games without victory - but United kept them out to move a point ahead of fourth-placed Motherwell.

With sixth-placed Hearts winning the Edinburgh derby earlier in the day, the remainder of the Dons' season looks certain to involve a bottom-six scrap.
