St Mirren   0 - 0   Hamilton

Alex Neil (r) and Steven Thomson in action at St Mirren Park
Steven Thomson and Alex Neil compete for possession in a disappointing game

St Mirren and Hamilton cancelled one another out in a poor match at the bottom of the Scottish Premier League.

Accies' James McArthur should have scored when he knocked the ball wide of an empty goal after Saints keeper Paul Gallacher had mis-hit his kick-out.

Mark McLaughlin headed a Marco Paixao corner just wide, then Saints' Graham Carey tested Tomas Cerny with a powerful late free-kick.

But with Falkirk losing at Tannadice, both sides will be happy with a point.

Yet at kick-off there was a feeling that the result could have a significant bearing on the relegation battle that is sure to take place in the coming weeks.

Hamilton took control of the early exchanges, with the hosts - minus injured Jack Ross - grateful to have defenders Lee Mair and John Potter in the line-up following recovery from their respective knee and groin problems.

Accies boss Billy Reid dropped strikers Marco Paixao and his twin brother Flavio in favour of McLaughlin and Dougie Imrie, but it was McArthur who first threatened the Saints goal.

With five minutes on the clock Gallacher mis-hit his kick straight to Simon Mensing, who passed to the Accies midfielder who somehow knocked the ball wide from just a few yards out.

Determined to make amends, McArthur skinned Mair on the left wing and pinged a ball across the face of the goal that Chris Innes managed to scoop over his own bar, with Mensing waiting to pounce.

Unfortunately, Innes injured himself in making the clearance and had to be replaced by Allan Johnston, as St Mirren manager Gus MacPherson, lacking defensive options, was forced into a more offensive formation.

And when Andy Dorman managed a few strikes at Cerny's goal, it looked like the home side were beginning to take a grip of the game.

Cerny then saved a fine dead-ball strike from Buddies centre-forward Billy Mehmet, partnering Michael Higdon up front as they sought their first three points in the SPL since a 1-0 win over Aberdeen in January.

But the first half never really enthused the fans inside the Buddies' tidy stadium and there was almost a sigh of relief when referee Crawford Allan blew for the interval.

Reid adjusted his line-up within a few minutes of the re-start, Flavio Paixao replacing the injured James Wesolowski, Leicester City's on-loan midfielder keen to clinch a place in Australia's World Cup squad.

But there was little on offer to suggest that the second period was going to be any better fare than the first.

Gallacher had to tip away Brian Easton's punt, which threatened to sneak in under the bar, but again there was no threat from the Accies corner.

Accies substitute Marco Paixao replaced full-back Trent McClenahan as the Lanarkshire side tried another route to victory, while St Mirren introduced Craig Dargo for Higdon, but there was no immediate prospect of the opener at either end.

As Dargo tried to catch the pace of the game, he was booked for clipping the heels of Accies captain Alex Neil, then just a minute later slid in on the same player.

After a lengthy lecture, Allan let the striker off with a telling off.

Mark McLaughlin got too much on his header when Marco Paixao swung in a right-footed corner and Gallacher would have been relieved to see the ball flash a yard wide of his post.

With eight minutes remaining, Carey struck a powerful free-kick that dipped right in front of Cerny but the Czech Republic keeper saved well.

Tempers flared somewhat in the closing minutes, showing at least that both sides cared about the result of a disappointing match.
