Falkirk   0 - 0   Motherwell

Giles Coke is sent off against Falkirk
Coke is shown the red card for his tackle on Scott Arfield

Falkirk failed to take advantage of the extra man against Motherwell and remain bottom of the Scottish Premier League.

Both sides started brightly, with Enoch Showunmi going close before Falkirk skipper Darren Barr made a great last-ditch challenge on Ross Forbes.

Motherwell midfielder Giles Coke was shown a straight red for a late tackle on Scott Arfield just before half-time.

Falkirk claimed for a goal in the 80th minute when John Ruddy stumbled as he caught a shot underneath his crossbar.

Motherwell manager Craig Brown's appointment until at least the end of the season came less than an hour before kick-off and followed the earlier good news that Ruddy and Everton team-mate Lukas Jutkiewicz had extended their loan deals until the summer.

The visitors controlled the early stages and Falkirk manager Eddie May, already missing Brian McLean through injury, was forced into a reshuffle of his defence when Pedro Pele was stretchered off in the 13th minute.

Stewart Murdoch came on at right-back, with Jackie McNamara moving to left-back and Marc Twaddle pushing into the centre.

Motherwell continued to press and Ross Forbes' cross was a fraction too high for Coke to convert.

Carl Finnigan's first touch let him down after Arfield played him through but the striker almost atoned when he headed towards the far post following Jack Compton's corner, with Lasley clearing well as Showunmi tried to pounce.

Falkirk improved and Arfield and Darren Barr missed half-chances before their best chance of the half fell to Showunmi. Colin Healy played Jack Compton's deep corner back across the face of goal but the former Leeds striker headed into the arms of the grounded Ruddy.

Coke was sent off after a high and late tackle on Arfield, but the 10 men started the second half the better side and Olejnik saved two curling efforts from Forbes, before Murdoch survived a penalty claim when he nudged John Sutton as the striker attacked Keith Lasley's cross.

Ruddy secured a point for the visitors in the 87th minute when he clawed the ball away from his top corner after Compton's cross had looped off Tom Hateley's head.

Falkirk manager Eddie May:

"You have to try to use your man but unfortunately our pitch is not great and not really for passing.

"So I don't think we got much advantage. You can't really have a touch going forward, because if you do it's usually at your knee.

"People will say you should really beat 10 men. I was at Ibrox on Saturday and Hearts went down to 10 men and scored a minute later. It's not easy playing against 10 men.

"I don't think they caused us any problems, even when they had 11 men."

Motherwell manager Craig Brown:

"I thought we were pretty poor in the first half and the ordering off was symptomatic of being late in the tackle.

"I said to Giles Coke he hadn't been in touch with the tackle the whole of the first half. He didn't mean it but he didn't mean to be second to every ball in the first half.

"I think we responded quite well and I think had the better of the second half with a man short.

"Stephen Craigan had the best chance and he headed it straight to the goalkeeper.

"I think a draw was fair - a poor draw, but a fighting draw for us."
