Hibernian   5 - 1   Hamilton

Hibernian forwards Colin Nish and Derek Riordan
Nish and Riordan were both on the scoresheet in Hibernian's victory

Hibernian reclaimed third spot in the Scottish Premier League with a ruthless victory over Hamilton Academical at Easter Road.

Accies came close on several occasions while Hibs built up a three-goal lead, courtesy of strikes by Colin Nish, Anthony Stokes and Derek Riordan.

Riordan grabbed his second of the day with a well taken free-kick and Stokes fired Hibs' fifth on 53 minutes.

Flavio Paixao grabbed a consolation for Hamilton on 69 minutes.

Hamilton were prominent as an attacking force in the early stages with Simon Mensing's speculative shot tipped over by goalkeeper Graeme Smith.

And from the resulting corner, Marco Paixao's delivery was hooked goalwards by Mark McLaughlin, forcing Paul Hanlon to make a goal-line clearance.

Hibs settled themselves and came close to taking the lead when Stokes went through on goal and saw his shot saved at the last moment by Tomas Cerny.

The home side had the ball in the net after Nish and David Wotherspoon combined to set up Riordan, but the forward's effort was ruled out by the offside flag.

However, Hibs were not to be denied in the 19th minute as Liam Miller's revers pass found Nish and the striker clipped the ball over Cerny and into the net.

Accies went back on the attack and Mensing's cross was flicked towards goal by Mickael Antoine-Curier, only for the alert Smith to make a superb reflex save and keep Hibs ahead.

And Hibs soon doubled their lead as Stokes outmuscled Alex Neil and fired home a deflected shot from 18 yards out on 21 minutes.

Hamilton came close again when Richard Hastings' cross caught out Smith and struck the top of the crossbar.

Another effort by Mensing drifted just wide before the visitors fell further behind.

Stokes terrorised the Accies defence before hammering in a shot with the outside of his foot that Cerny touched onto the bar and Riordan followed up with a composed tap-in.

Undeterred by the deficit, Accies continued to press and Antoine-Curier forced a one-handed save from Smith with a powerful shot.

Alex Neil fouled John Rankin on the edge of the box and Cerny was powerless to prevent Riordan's accurate shot finding the net four minutes after the break.

Riordan missed a chance to complete his hat-trick before being involved in the build-up to Stokes' second, which saw the Republic of Ireland striker sweeping home after toying with the Accies defence.

Flavio Paixao pulled one back for the visitors when he converted Stuart Elliot's deflected cross and James McArthur and Mensing had further efforts for Accies late on.

Hibernian manager John Hughes:
"We've got goals in this team and that was evident today, with the three strikers getting on target.

"Our goalkeeper made two great saves in the first 10 minutes and once we got the first goal we put the foot to the floor and really took the game to them.

"I think we got Hamilton at a good time, you could see they were heavy-legged.

"We were good for an hour but we're not getting carried away, we still have miles of work in front of us.

"We've come this far and I want that third place and a European spot."

Hamilton manager Billy Reid:
"That was one of the strangest games I've been involved in for a long time.

"I thought we started well, we had the two best chances early doors and I didn't think it was a 3-0 first half.

"I'm proud of my players, they never gave in and we were the dominant team for the final half hour.

"We created chances but I think it's all credit to Hibs' goalkeeper, he was sensational."
