Kilmarnock   0 - 3   Motherwell

Jim O'Brien
Jim O'Brien netted twice in Motherwell's win away to Kilmarnock

Jimmy Calderwood suffered defeat in his first game in charge of Kilmarnock as Craig Brown earned his first three points as Motherwell manager.

Motherwell's Jim O'Brien opened the scoring with a left-footed shot into the bottom corner in the 55th minute.

O'Brien doubled his tally 20 minutes from time with another close-range drive low into the net.

Eight minutes later, Lukas Jutkiewicz completed the win for Motherwell from inside the box with low strike.

Calderwood and Brown made a number of changes in charge of their new clubs.

Former Aberdeen boss Calderwood recalled captain Kevin Kyle, Mark Burchill, Mehdi Taouil, Garry Hay, Simon Ford and Cameron Bell, while one-time Scotland coach Brown drafted in Keith Lasley, Giles Coke and John Sutton.

The match went ahead despite burst pipes forcing the closure of the stands behind both goals at Rugby Park.

Two of Brown's picks combined for the first effort on goal in the fourth minute when an under-pressure Sutton headed Lasley's cross over.

Jutkiewicz then scuffed a low shot wide from 18 yards before a vital Frazer Wright interception denied Sutton from point-blank range.

On-loan Everton striker Jutkiewicz was inches from opening the scoring in the 14th minute with a left-footed strike from 10 yards as Motherwell continued to dominate.

Killie finally had a shot on goal six minutes later when Taouil curled just wide from the edge of the area.

And they could have led moments later when Craig Bryson was denied by John Ruddy, who made himself big enough to smother the midfielder's shot.

Opposite number Bell also needed to be sharp to turn the latest Jutkiewicz effort round the post.

Motherwell broke the deadlock 10 minutes after the break when O'Brien sent in a left-footed shot to the bottom corner.

Mark Burchill could easily have levelled moments later, but he headed Mehdi Taouil's cross over the bar.

O'Brien made it two in the 70th minute with another fine close-range shot.

Jutkiewicz put the seal on an the win for the visitors eight minutes later, when he found the corner of the net on the rebound after Sutton's initial shot was blocked.

A mazy run and thumping angled drive from Chris Humphrey almost made it 4-0 before Jutkiewicz came off for Robert McHugh.

John Ruddy prevented Fernandez netting a late consolation, while Kyle's wayward last-minute effort summed up Killie's afternoon.

Kilmarnock manager Jimmy Calderwood: "We're going to need characters to win games here.

"The players need to settle into how we want to play when we've got the ball and when we haven't got the ball. It's elementary stuff.

"We need to get on with it on Monday night against Falkirk. If we win, it's looking a lot brighter."

Motherwell caretaker manager Craig Brown:

"My players got what they deserved, because they've been working without a match for two weeks and it's hard to train without an incentive.

"The first goal in a game of this nature was going to be vital. If Kilmarnock had got the first goal with a new manager, they would have been right behind the team.

"To play against a new manager, especially with Jimmy's presence and motivational qualities and charismatic nature, we had to play well, and I thought we did that in the second half."
