Danny Swanson and Jon Daly celebrate Dundee United's opening goal
Swanson (left) broke the deadlock against Hibs for United

By Clive Lindsay

Dundee United deservedly leapfrogged Hibernian into third spot in the Scottish Premier League thanks to Danny Swanson's first goal of the season.

David Goodwillie had a disputed penalty saved by Graeme Smith and then headed wide from the rebound.

But the striker set up Swanson to fire home from 16 yards after 39 minutes.

Hibs' John Rankin and and Liam Miller, plus United's Jon Daly, had efforts saved before David Wotherspoon's shot struck a post for the visitors.

The victory lifts United a point above Hibs, although the Edinburgh outfit have a game in hand, and Peter Houston's side will be thankful that referee Steve Conroy ruled the pitch playable after a late inspection following heavy rain.

United had been forced into changes, with Darren Dods replacing the ill Garry Kenneth and Swanson coming in for the injured David Robertson, while Daly was preferred to top scorer Damian Casalinuovo up front.

Despite those alterations, the home side were the more dangerous in a lively start to a match during which both sides appeared determined to play passing football.

And, after a few balls raked dangerously into the Hibs penalty box, Smith did well to beat away a powerful low free-kick from Paul Dixon that took a deflection off the defensive wall.

Daly somehow managed to completely miss his header when he rose unchallenged to meet a corner, while Hibs' first threat came from a volleyed cross-cum-shot by Derek Riordan into the six-yard box that was beaten away by goalkeeper Dusan Pernis.

Opposite number Smith made a fine save to deny Daly from point-blank range when the striker rose at the back post.

Hibs had fielded a more defensive line-up to the one that beat juniors Irvine Meadow in the Scottish Cup, with Patrick Cregg in for striker Colin Nish, but they had to alter things further when they lost midfielder Merouane Zemmama through injury shortly after the half-hour mark.

He was replaced with striker and fellow Moroccan Abdessalam and the reorganised visitors should have been behind moments later.

Prince Buaben was tripped by Chris Hogg and, although the offence clearly took place a yard outside the box before the midfielder's momentum took him forward, Conroy awarded a spot kick after consulting his linesman.

Goodwillie's poorly struck penalty was saved by Smith, but the striker was given a second opportunity from the rebound only to head wide of the unguarded net.

The United man who had scored in their last two games made amends when he slipped a nice ball behind the Hibs defence and Swanson fired the ball low into the far corner of the net from 16 yards.

Hibs at last managed a shot on target shortly before the break when Rankin curled a free-kick over the wall that was pushed away by Pernis, making his home debut.

Visiting manager John Hughes switched to a back three at half-time, bringing on Steve Thicot for midfielder Cregg and United immediately found a way through the altered defence.

Goodwillie weaved his way to the by-line before finding Daly, whose close-range shot was blocked clear by Smith's legs.

Pernis was forced to show the class that led Craig Levein to sign him before moving to become Scotland coach by pushing clear Miller's drive from the edge of the box.

Substitute Nish headed just wide under pressure as Hibs began to show greater urgency and win more possession and then a volley from Wotherspoon rebounded off the post then off the back of Pernis before rolling for a corner.

Dundee United manager Peter Houston:

"Dusan was magnificent. He made a great save from John Rankin's free-kick and looked assured and was calm and collected.

"Swanson has had to be patient and wait for a starting place and he rewarded us with a fine performance and an excellent goal. Conway was the same.

"it was a great run from Danny Swanson behind the full back and he slotted it away beautifully.

"I look at the first half performance and I think it was our best for months."

Hibernian manager John Hughes:

"Once the referee sees the penalty on TV, he will see it was a half yard outside the box.

"Thankfully, we were not punished for it as Graeme Smith made a good save.

"I have to say, for the goal, Goodwillie looked a yard offside and that's an easy one for the linesman right along the line.

"Over the piece, did we do enough for a draw? Possibly yes in the second half without creating any great chances."
