Hamilton   0 - 1   Dundee Utd

Garry Kenneth and David Goodwillie celebrate for Dundee United
Kenneth and Goodwillie combined for the winning goal

David Goodwillie scored his second goal in two games to give Dundee United victory over Hamilton Academical.

The striker showed great composure to to fire low into the net from 12 yards after meeting a Garry Kenneth cross 15 minutes from time at New Douglas Park.

Goodwillie was twice denied in the first half by good Tomas Cerny saves.

Simon Mensing missed a good chance for Hamilton, who were lucky to survive when Alex Neil struck his own post, but United deserved their eventual winner.

The three points were the first for Peter Houston as United's interim manager.

And it consolidated their position in fourth place in the Scottish Premier League, lifting them to within two points of third-top Hibernian, who are the visitors to Tannadice on Saturday.

Match-winner Goodwillie had been handed a starting place, with Jon Daly dropping to the bench, following his slalom-like goal in Saturday's Scottish Cup victory over Partick Thistle.

Accies also went into the meeting with United in good heart following Sunday's thrilling 3-3 cup draw with Rangers and manager Billy Reid named an unchanged side, with new signing David van Zanten having to be content with a place on the bench.

Those respective cup exploits promised an exciting game and it was the home side who looked the more dangerous early on.

Mickael Antoine-Curier's cross found Stuart Elliott, whose bullet-like header was blocked by Kenneth amid half-hearted claims the defender had used his hand.

Goodwillie was not too far away with an angled drive that Cerny did well to palm to safety.

Hamilton still looked the more likely side to open the scoring and they squandered another opportunity when Neil, making his 150th appearance, picked out Mensing only for the midfielder to nod just wide of target.

United almost snatched the opener when Paul Dixon punted a dangerous free-kick into the box, with Neil's attempt at a clearance smacking the post.

A dreadful attempt at a passback from Elliott gifted Goodwillie possession, who bore down on goal and looked set to open the scoring just before the break only for Cerny to dive low and smother.

Both side were desperate for the second-half goal that could seal the three points and Accies' James McArthur resorted to a long-range effort that cannoned off a Tangerine jersey before Antoine-Curier's shot from distance deflected just wide.

Marco Paixao had the ball in the back of the net for Hamilton but was flagged for offside before the shot had left his boot.

Then, with 15 minutes to go, United also had the net bulging. This time there could be no complaints as Kenneth provided the cutback for Goodwillie to lash home from just inside the box to leave Cerny helpless.

Accies tried to hit back for a late leveller through substitute Ali Crawford, but the debutant's angled drive was well held by goalkeeper Dusan Pernis.

United had claims for a late penalty rejected when McArthur appeared to foul Danny Swanson in the box, referee Iain Brines having consulted his assistant.

One goal proved to be enough to leave Accies third bottom of the SPL table.

Hamilton Accies manager Billy Reid:

"Playing on Sunday took a lot out of ourselves and we did not have a spark tonight.

"That was our first game in four weeks and it showed tonight as we huffed and puffed.

"It was a scrappy game, but United have got the chance and put the ball in the net and have deserved that.

"But we will regroup and I have told the players to keep believing in themselves, but the disappointing thing for me is that James Wesolowski has picked up a hamstring injury."

Dundee United interim manager Peter Houston:

"I thought our centre-backs were magnificent tonight. They put their heads on everything and held the team together as I thought we were a bit sloppy in the first half.

"We created some good chances and their goalkeeper had some cracking saves, but at the back we had to be strong and I thought the centre-halfs and the goalkeeper stood strong.

"You sometimes have to come to places and grind out results and I felt that tonight we had to grind out a result.

"I am just delighted with the three points and there's a lot of happy players in the dressing-room."
