St Mirren   1 - 0   Kilmarnock

St Mirren v Kilmarnock
Chris Innes was vital for St Mirren at both ends of the pitch

A Chris Innes header handed the points to St Mirren in a stuffy encounter at a snowy St Mirren Park.

The home side perhaps had the best of a drab opening half, but passed up the best chance when Killie keeper Mark Brown palmed wide Andy Dorman's shot.

Kilmarnock improved in the second half, but despite some intelligent play they failed to break the deadlock.

Influential striker Kevin Kyle came off the bench for Killie, but it was Innes' late goal which proved decisive.

The home side had the best of the opening spell but struggled to carve out a clear opportunity despite enjoying the bulk of possession as Kilmarnock were clearly missing key striker Kyle, on the bench with a virus.

Both sides continued to struggle to create as the snow began to fall at St Mirren Park, which did little to improve the quality on display.

A mazy run from midfielder Dorman finished with the Welshman firing in a low shot from about 12 yards out, only for Killie keeper Brown to tip the ball wide via the post.

St Mirren defender David Barron blazed in a long-range effort as the half began to liven up, but his rushed effort was well off-target.

Killie managed a rare effort in what had been a chance-starved half, but David Fernandez's tame effort went comfortably wide of the mark.

The visitors were starting to hit effectively on the counter and full-back Jamie Hamill found himself one-on-one with Paul Gallacher in the St Mirren goal, but his shot was straight at the keeper.

Sammon had the first real chance of the opening period after sterling work on the right wing from Danny Invincibile, but the big striker's shot was off-target.

The Irishman had the game's next real effort as both sides still struggled to break down each other's defences, but his right-footed volley went high and wide.

St Mirren striker Craig Dargo then passed up the best chance of the game so far as he pounced on a corner at the back post, but the former Killie man couldn't get his effort away quickly enough and his shot was deflected past the post by a defender.

Kilmarnock manager Jim Jefferies clearly felt the game was there to be won, as he brought on the ill Kyle for Sammon, but the decision was met with a volley of boos from the Killie fans who clearly wanted both strikers on the pitch.

Despite the the appearance of the talismanic Kyle, it was Invincibile who next went close, but he flashed a drive over the bar after being teed up at the edge of the box by substitute Mehdi Taouil.

Just as it seemed that the match would end goalless, St Mirren broke the deadlock when substitute Innes headed home at the back post from Dorman's excellent corner to put the home side ahead.

Goalscorer Innes then ensured his side held onto all three points as he cleared Taouil's low shot from the edge of the box off the line with seconds of injury time remaining.

St Mirren manager Gus MacPherson:
"I think anyone who has been at our home games this season will have seen far better performances, but we've only had a point to show for it.

"I've said I would sacrifice the performance if we could just get the three points.

"Because that's what players will get belief and confidence from.

"If we can just build a bit of momentum from that result, then things will look better."

Kilmarnock manager Jim Jefferies:
"It wasn't a great game, both teams cancelled each other out, but when it's like that you just need to knuckle down.

"If you switch off for a second, at a set-play in particular, that's what costs you the game.

"My worry is that teams are beating us with the odd goal. We've been performing well, but our problem all year has been putting the ball in the net.

"If you don't do that, it just takes one goal to beat you, and that's what's been happening a lot."
