Falkirk   0 - 1   Hearts

Jose Goncalves congratulates Michael Stewart after his penalty
Stewart broke the deadlock for Hearts from the penalty spot

Michael Stewart's second penalty in a week gave Hearts a win over Falkirk to lift the Edinburgh side into the top six for the first time this season.

Hearts had the bulk of possession in the first half, but Marian Kello was the busier of the two goalkeepers.

Stewart fired home after Jose Goncalves was fouled by Darren Barr.

Toufik Zerara and Danijel Marceta forced Kello into a couple more saves after the break, but Hearts won a game in which they had two shots on target.

Hearts boss Csaba Laszlo had been forced to tinker with the team that performed so well in defeating Celtic, with Marius Zaliukas stepping in for injured defender Craig Thomson.

Home manager Eddie May had stayed faithful to the players that won away to Kilmarnock last weekend.

And his in-form side were first to threaten after three minutes, when Vitor Lima pounced on Stewart's poor clearance and shot from 40 yards straight into Kello's arms.

Hearts began to enjoy territorial advantage, but Falkirk were dangerous on the counter-attack and Carl Finnigan brought out a save from Kello from a tight angle.

Minutes later, Ryan Flynn broke from a David Templeton corner, but his low effort was held by the goalkeeper and, after soaking up Hearts pressure, Falkirk upped the tempo.

Firstly, Pedro Moutinho's free-kick from the edge of the area flew straight into Kello's arms and then, from a corner kick, Flynn shot wildly over the bar.

Hearts were given the chance to break the deadlock when Goncalves was brought to the ground by Barr inside the box.

Referee Callum Murray had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot and Stewart successfully converted, finding the corner of the net two minutes before the interval.

Falkirk were presented with a chance to restore parity two minutes after the restart when Hearts striker Jamie Mole was penalised for hauling down Lima 25 yards from goal.

Zerara struck a left-footed shot over the wall, but Kello got down well to his effort.

Finnigan beat the offside trap, but the marksman's delivery from the edge of the box was poor and Hearts mopped up the threat.

Falkirk's Vitor Lima and Hearts' Eggert Jonsson tussle
Falkirk and Hearts were involved in a midfield battle

Falkirk were the more lively side following the half-time interval as Hearts struggled to find any cohesion.

Bairns goalkeeper Robert Olejnik was relieved to see Eggert Jonsson's header from substitute Suso's corner drift wide as the midfielder got to the ball before the goalkeeper.

Marceta forced another corner for his side as his low shot was palmed behind by the outstretched Kello after the winger cut inside from 18 yards.

Hearts defender Ismael Bouzid should have done better with a free-header from Suso's corner as his effort drifted off the top of his head and well wide.

The away team registered only their second shot on target in the dying minutes when Suso toe-poked an effort straight at Olejnik, but they still did enough to take the three points.

Falkirk manager Eddie May:
"I thought we were absolutely terrible the whole day in terms of quality.

"We got what we deserved, we got beat 1-0.

"If I'm being honest, we never reached any consistency at all. Anything we've got this season, we've had to play really well for.

If we don't, we don't get anything - and I expect a better standard than that.

"We have to play better than that. There's no hiding place when you go on a football park.

"I ask my players to be brave on the ball and have ability to take people on, but we certainly didn't do that today."

Hearts manager Csaba Laszlo:
"We can't talk about nice, fantastic football, we can only talk about the three points.

In our situation, it's only important to play successful football.

"

"The truth is our opponents did not have any real chances on goal.

"The key for us was a good team performance and the spirit."
