Kilmarnock   1 - 2   Falkirk

Carl Finnegan
Carl Finnegan opened the scoring for Falkirk in the third minute at Rugby Park

By Martin Conaghan

Falkirk remained within a point of Kilmarnock at the bottom of the league table with a narrow win at Rugby Park.

Killie were trailing after three minutes when Carl Finnegan latched on to a Pedro Moutinho cross to fire in.

Parity was restored when Danny Invincibile latched on to a lob and fired past Olejnik five minutes later.

Falkirk claimed the points in the second half with a bizarre strike after Ryan Flynn flighted in a corner that found its way into the Killie goal.

Keeper Mark Brown recovered from illness to take the gloves as Killie manager Jim Jefferies kept the same side that drew with Hibernian last week, with Kevin Kyle partnering Mark Burchill in attack.

Bottom side Falkirk were unchanged following their draw with St Mirren last week, with Pedro Moutinho and Finnigan remaining in attack.

With only three minutes of the match played, Moutinho sent in a blistering cross from the right-hand side and Finnigan first-timed the ball past on-loan Celtic kman Brown for the opener.

Five minutes later, Invincibile equalised after Garry Hay lobbed a ball into the Falkirk six-yard area and the Australian struck for goal. Olejnik got a hand to it but could do nothing to keep it out.

A Mark Burchill solo effort in the 15th minute could have reaped more rewards had the former Celtic man chose not to fire straight at Olejnik with Craig Bryson waiting on the six-yard line.

Moments later, Falkirk midfielder Vitor Lima blasted in a 25-yard effort, but the Portuguese miss-cued his shot and it drifted wide.

Moutinho powered into the Kilmarnock box shortly after the half-hour mark as the hosts pushed for a lead, but Frazer Wright cut out the danger, then Finnegan headed over the bar from the resulting corner.

Shortly after the break, Bryson powered into the Falkirk penalty area and turned inside only for his short to be cleared away.

Moments later, Scott Arfield replied with a shot at the other end, but Brown made the save.

Falkirk reclaimed the lead 13 minutes into the second half from the boot of Flynn after the on-loan Liverpool man sent in a curling corner that somehow found its way into the net.

Moutinho could have increased the tally two minutes later but contrived to send a close-range effort over the bar.

On-form Olejnik kept out a Simon Ford shot after good work by Jamie Hamill, then Finnegan sent a fine chance over the bar from 10 yards out as Falkirk sought to put the game beyond their hosts.

Mehdi Taouil could have restored parity with seven minutes remaining after the Moroccan delivered a shot from the edge of the Falkirk penalty area that swerved wide.

A long-distance shot from Hay was gathered by Olejnik as Killie continued to press for an equaliser.

Moments later, Wright lifted a six-yard shot over the bar as the visitors frustrated Killie's chances to claim only their second win of the season.

Kilmarnock manager Jim Jefferies:
"In the second half, we didn't show the desire that we showed against Hibs.

"The application of effort and commitment wasn't the same as it was the week before.

"We got on the back foot and it always looked like we could lose a goal - although, not the way we did. It was an unbelievable goal to lose at this level. How it went in, I don't know.

"After that, you could see we became a bit jaded because we had fought back and we were having to do it again.

"But I thought Falkirk could have had one or two more - they had more hunger and desire."

Falkirk manager Eddie May:
"Overall, in terms of the game and how we played, I think we deserved the points against difficult opponents.

"It's a big win and it gets us closer to Kilmarnock.

"Hopefully, we can strike a bit of form over the next few games and win a few.

"I think in certain performances we've done well this year but not got the points. The three points is the most important thing in this league.

"If you can gather that, you can find yourself going up the league quite quickly. But, if you don't, you can find yourself coming down very quickly.

"We're not going to get carried away, we've only won two games this season."
