Motherwell   2 - 2   Dundee Utd

Andy Webster celebrates his opener for Dundee United
Andy Webster celebrates his opener for Dundee United at Fir Park

Dundee United had two men sent off at Motherwell but Craig Levein's side hung on to register a draw.

In 14 minutes Andy Webster pounced on a weak clearance to volley the opener for the Terrors from the edge of the box.

John Sutton headed home a Ross Forbes corner just two minutes later to level the score, then Lukas Jutkiewicz fired home his fifth Well goal in a month.

Prince Buaben was shown two yellow cards before sub Jon Daly grabbed the equaliser and Danny Swanson saw red.

With Motherwell and Dundee United three and six points better off respectively than they were after the same number of games last season, both sides can claim to have been showing signs of improvement.

Indeed, given Aberdeen's defeat of Rangers in the lunch-time kick-off, Craig Levein's side had the incentive of knowing three points would pull them level with the Ibrox side.

The Terrors went ahead through Andy Webster in the 14th minute, the on-loan Rangers defender powering a dipping right-foot volley from the edge of the area beyond John Ruddy, the keeper who was so impressive against Aberdeen last week.

The battle between Motherwell strikers Jutkiewicz and Sutton and Dundee United's defensive pairing of Darren Dods and Webster always looked as if it would have a major bearing on the result of this match.

And within 15 minutes, the claret and amber English pair had made their mark on the game.

Seconds after Webster's strike, his defensive team-mate Paul Dixon did brilliantly with a tackle to stymie Sutton, but the big striker wasn't to be denied for long.

Ross Forbes floated in a corner and, just as the Celtic defence had failed to deal with Daly and Dods last Sunday, the United back line could not match the desire of Sutton to get on the end of it and he headed past Nicky Weaver from six yards.

Damian Casalinuovo and Morgaro Gomis had attempts at the home goal as United tried to seize the initiative but it was Sutton's strike partner who gave joy to the Fir Park supporters.

Jutkiewicz maintained his fearsome scoring record of late with a low drive from a yard outside the box which zipped across Weaver and into the far corner of the net.

Keith Lasley and Jim O'Brien came on for Ross Forbes and Jamie Murphy respectively with 10 minutes played in the second period, while Levein juggled his striking options by sending on David Goodwillie and Daly for Danny Cadamarteri and Casalinuovo.

Both sides deserve credit for their willingness to play the ball on the Fir Park surface, something that has been rather difficult to do in recent years before the pitch was re-laid.

And there was more space for flowing football when the Tangerines' Prince Buaben received a second yellow card for a challenge on sub O'Brien, having been booked earlier by referee Alan Muir for a foul on Murphy.

Swanson intercepted a slack Motherwell pass to set up Daly but his shot was parried by the alert Ruddy and Goodwillie blasted over the bar.

In a repeat of last week's win over Celtic, substitute Daly levelled the score. Dixon crossed with purpose from the left and Daly nicked between the dithering Motherwell defence to prod the ball past Ruddy.

Much to United's disbelief and horror, they were reduced to nine men when Swanson was shown a straight red card with four minutes remaining for a sliding challenge on Lasley.

Weaver produced a last-minute save from Lasley, turning his shot round the post to earn his team a point.

Motherwell manager Jim Gannon: "It was threatening to be a brilliant game. It was just unfortunate how the second half materialised because the referee destroyed the game.

"I think we've always got a danger when a referee doesn't know a foul. It's a concern for the league. The standard of refereeing is bringing the game into disrepute.

"It was a great game of football, a fantastic and intriguing battle.

"Dundee United will be delighted that they have come away with a point especially with the circumstances they were left in, but overall the feeling is anger because of the way the game deteriorated.

"I've written to Hugh Dallas in a formal letter - there is no reporting structure - on two occasions and I've not received a reply yet.

"I explained in the last letter that if we don't see some dialogue then I will have to speak openly about it.

"I've tried to respect a vow of silence but it's time people realised that there is something seriously awry in the game when somebody of that standard can referee an SPL match."

Dundee United manager Craig Levein:
"I don't know how much I can say without getting myself in trouble. I thought it was a very poor performance from the referee.

"He continually got decisions wrong; we had two players sent off who shouldn't have been.

"We had a player still on the pitch who should've been sent off.

"I've been in football for the majority of my life and recognise a booking and sending off.

"I think the referee was far too hasty and that was evident in the decisions he made."
