St Mirren   1 - 1   Hibernian

Derek Riordan is mobbed by his ecstatic Hibs team-mates after his wonder strike against St Mirren
Derek Riordan opened the scoring in spectacular fashion

St Mirren had defender Chris Innes to thank for securing a point against Hibs as the hosts were left to rue their profligacy in front of goal.

Steven Thomson, Stephen McGinn and Andy Dorman all passed up chances to score before Hibs broke the deadlock against the run of play in the 29th minute.

Hibs midfielder Derek Riordan fired a spectacular 25-yard strike past the helpless Paul Gallacher.

But Innes headed the equaliser in first half injury-time to rescue a point.

St Mirren raced out the traps early on and defender David Barron sent a drive flashing just wide of Graham Stack's right-hand post.

Stack rescued Hibs three minutes later when he reacted brilliantly to block Thomson's close-range drive and was at his best to save McGinn's blistering effort from 25 yards.

The home supporters appealed in vain for a penalty when Hibs defender Ian Murray appeared to handle in the box but referee Willie Collum waved play on.

Dorman then spurned a great chance to break the deadlock in the 26th minute when, through one-on-one with Graham Stack, he screwed his effort wide.

And the visitors made Saints pay for their profligacy with a wonderful goal by Riordan.

The former Celtic striker picked up a Liam Miller pass wide on the left, turned onto his right foot and thundered a 25-yard shot past the despairing Gallacher.

But St Mirren restored parity in injury time at the end of the first half when Innes headed home Jack Ross's free-kick.

The second half was a fairly drab affair as both sides chased a winner.

Hibs appeared to lack belief that they could go on and win the game and it was the hosts who looked the likelier to take all three points.

Riordan flashed a late drive wide as he failed to replicate his first-half wonder strike.

St Mirren manager Gus MacPherson:

"I think that was two points dropped today. I was really scratching my head that we were 1-0 down just before half-time.

"But we got back into it, even thought it took us a while to get going again after the break.

"I'm glad we've taken something out of the game. We played well. It's another point on the board but I'm frustrated that we've dropped two."

Hibernian manager John Hughes:

"I thought the whole game was disappointing, with the overhead conditions and I felt both teams tried hard.

"St Mirren possibly shaded it in the first half, it wasn't a great game of football but my boys gave me plenty of effort.

"We won't split the Old Firm. I'm not being negative, all we're going to try to do in that dressing room is win as many games as we can and see where that takes us.

"Derek Riordan's goal was possibly the highlight of the game. He's capable of doing that and I'm delighted for him."
