St Mirren   0 - 2   Hamilton

Hamilton Accies' Marco Paixao
Paixao's goal gave Accies a dream start in Paisley

First-half goals from Marco Paixao and Martin Canning gave Hamilton Accies victory over an in-form St Mirren side.

Paixao was on hand to give the Accies the lead after just three minutes from close range.

Minutes before the half-time break, defender Canning doubled Accies' advantage as Paixao turned provider.

And, despite St Mirren rallying in the second period, their chances of a comeback were extinguished when Lee Mair saw red for a last-man foul.

The victory for Hamilton represents only their second league win of the season and takes them four points clear of bottom side Falkirk.

St Mirren would have been in confident mood ahead of the game, having hit nine goals in their last three games.

But, within minutes, the visitors stunned the home crowd when they took the lead with just three minutes gone through Paixao.

From a corner, James Wesolowski's shot was blocked, but Paixao reacted quickly to prod the rebound and stab low into the net.

Accies almost doubled their lead through James McArthur, but Paul Gallacher saved well from the midfielder's powerful volley.

At the other end, Tomas Cerny was untroubled in the Hamilton goal until he stopped Andy Dorman's deflected shot.

But it was Billy Reid's men who found the back of the net again just four minutes before the interval.

Paixao swung in a cross to set up Canning to rifle home.

St Mirren emerged for the second half determined to force their way back into the game and could have pulled a goal back shortly after the restart.

A Dorman free-kick picked out Michael Higdon in the box and he connected with the header but nodded just wide of target.

Jack Ross then played a good ball to Billy Mehmet, who unleashed a ferocious shot from the edge of the box that Cerny did well to tip over the crossbar.

But a bad day for St Mirren was compounded with 20 minutes to play when Lee Mair was shown a straight red card for bringing down Mickael Antoine-Curier in a last-man situation and the full-time whistle was greeted by jeering by sections of the home crowd.

St Mirren manager Gus MacPherson:
"We got off to a poor start. When you concede a goal in the manner we did then it gives Hamilton a lift and they're difficult to break down.

"The second goal we conceded from a set-piece before half-time compounded what was a very poor performance.

"We need to improve and get back to the standards we're capable of because we've got some tough games coming up.

"I didn't have a problem with Lee Mair's red card."

Hamilton manager Billy Reid:
"We weren't at our best in the first half and St Mirren passed better than us. But goals change games.

"The first goal was a settler but it took until the second to take the pressure off us.

"But St Mirren have been playing well and scoring goals. So, to win and keep a clean sheet is satisfying."
