Lucas Jutkiewicz challenges St Mirren's Lee Mair

St Mirren and Motherwell shared the points in an evenly-matched encounter in the Scottish Premier League.

A Hugh Murray strike gave St Mirren a half-time lead, but Ross Forbes's second-half penalty restored parity.

A tap-in from Andy Dorman reinstated St Mirren's lead and Murray's 72nd minute cross-cum-shot extended it.

Two minutes later, Lucas Jutkiewicz blasted a shot through the St Mirren defence, then fired in a volley in the 81st minute to seal the draw.

Gus MacPherson's side were aiming for their third successive league win, while Jim Gannon's visitors were keen to capitalise on their recent draws against both sides of the Old Firm.

Motherwell goalkeeper John Ruddy twice saved well from Dorman early in the match, but the first half offered little in the way of comprehensive goalmouth action.

Jamie Murphy curled wide for Well from long range before Ruddy dived to save at the second attempt from Dorman when the midfielder curled a loose ball from 25 yards.

Billy Mehmet soon shot straight at the Motherwell goalkeeper after Yassin Moutaouakil had lost possession and Saints worked the ball quickly up the park.

Paul Gallacher helped a powerful 30-yard strike from Ross Forbes over the bar at the other end before Ross blazed over from inside the box after Mehmet had laid off following a throw-in.

St Mirren took the lead in the 42nd minute with a counter-attacking goal. Billy Mehmet crossed low from the left across the 18-yard box and Murray slotted the ball in off the far post.

Brighton was stretchered off in first-half injury-time after his touch allowed Steven Saunders to make a challenge on the edge of the box after Motherwell had again given away possession.

Shortly after the restart, Lee Mair gave away a penalty when he appeared to handle the ball in the penalty area and Ross Forbes stepped up to convert the spot-kick and level the scores.

Less than 10 minutes later, the Buddies re-took the lead when Dorman latched on to a failed clearance and poked in a scrappy close-range effort.

The Saints looked to have the points wrapped up when Murray's cross-cum-shot outfoxed Motherwell keeper Ruddy.

However, Jutkiewicz restored faith in the Motherwell fans with a powerful shot that rattled through the legs of the St Mirren defence and left Saints keeper Paul Gallacher standing.

The former Everton man helped himself to another in the 81st minute when he chested the ball down on the edge of the penalty area and was left unchallenged to drive a superb volley in and claim a hard-earned point for the Lanarkshire side.

St Mirren manager Gus MacPherson:

"I'm extremely frustrated and disappointed, because I think we played well and worked hard.

"Motherwell are a good team, but we worked hard when we didn't have the ball to try and stop them from playing.

"We got our rewards for that, we got ahead - but we should have been more ahead at half-time.

"I don't think the penalty was the turning point, because we reacted superbly to an injustice.

"As a team, we worked hard as a unit and we played well. It's just so disappointing, this situation."

Motherwell manager Jim Gannon:
"I'm disappointed with myself and the way the team approached the game.

"Before I look at the players I look at whether there are lessons to be learned.

"It wasn't an inquest, it's just that this is a game probably more than any other game we have got a lot to learn from.

"It was fortunate that we got the second goal when we did but the game was far from over at that point and it instilled a bit of life in our players. I think the substitutes gave us a little bit extra."
