Aberdeen   0 - 2   Dundee Utd

Injury-hit Dundee United eased to a deserved win over Aberdeen to stay fourth in the Scottish Premier League.

Fraser Fyvie missed a great early chance for Aberdeen while Danny Cadamarteri fired against the outside of the post at the other end.

Dons striker Lee Miller should have done better than send a close-range shot against the crossbar.

Damian Casalinuovo deflected the ball home and Morgaro Gomis sidefooted in within five minutes before the break.

It meant it was a losing debut in an Aberdeen jersey for former Rangers defender Maurice Ross, who had signed for the Pittodrie club on Thursday.

Jerel Ifil had also returned to the heart of the Dons defence from injury, with Stuart Duff dropping to the bench and Gary McDonald missing out.

Cadamarteri returned from injury and Prince Buaben from suspension, while Mihael Kovacevic was back in the side with Andy Webster and David Robertson out injured and Craig Conway dropped to the bench.

Darren Dods had passed a late fitness test. But, with Webster and Lee Wilkie missing, the re-organised United defence almost loss a goal immediately.

However, 16-year-old Dons midfielder Fyvie squandered the chance after pouncing on a poor Sean Dillon header, curling wide with only goalkeeper Nicky Weaver to beat.

The fixture had served up 34 goals in the previous 11 meetings between the sides and the driving, torrential rain ensured it would be a testing afternoon for both goalkeepers.

United were playing the better football and Danny Cadamarteri sent an effort off the outside of the post after turned Ifil.

However, it was Aberdeen who again created the better clear-cut chance.

Charlie Mulgrew found Miller on the edge of the six-yard box, the striker sidestepped Dillon but fired the ball against the top of the crossbar.

It was United who broke the deadlock after goalkeeper Jamie Langfield had turned a long-range effort from Cadamarteri wide of the post.

From the corner, Casalinuovo deflected the ball into the net from five yards despite the despairing attempt to clear it off the line by Richard Foster.

Gomis put the visitors in control with the second goal against Aberdeen

United extended their lead five minutes later when Garry Kenneth's low cross found Gomis just inside the penalty box and the Frenchman side-footed the ball home.

The Dons had an opportunity to test Weaver, but Mark Kerr's shot from the edge of the box lacked conviction and the goalkeeper saved easily.

United squandered the first chance of the second half, Kenneth finding himself free of markers 10 yards out from a corner but squirming his header wide of the far post.

The visitors sat back for most of the second half. However, apart from a Sone Aluko effort that squirmed wide of the far post, the heavy rain troubled the United defence more than the Dons attack.

Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee:

"We had great chances, so it was an unnecessary defeat.

"It was not just Fraser Fyvie, who went on to have a good game, but international players like Lee Miller.

"We said before the game that it would be difficult to defend set-pieces in those conditions and they took advantage of that in the first half.

"The missed chances are the one disappointing aspect as we matched them all over the field and I'm satisfied that we are making progress."

Dundee United manager Craig Levein:

"We had an added incentive as Mark had a little go and the players felt slighted at the comments that he made in the paper during the week there.

"I did not have to say anything. He gave the players the motivation and my team talk was easy.

"Any time you come up to this stadium, it's difficult to get any points from the game, so I am really happy.

"These were two teams that tried to play football, but the horrendous conditions would not let us.

"They had two good chances, but we had some astonishing misses as well."
