Webster's deflected effort secured a draw for United

Defender Andy Webster rescued a point for Dundee United in an entertaining draw with Hibs at Easter Road.

Merouane Zemmama fired the hosts into a deserved lead when he stepped away from Webster before arrowing a superb left foot shot in off the bar.

A rejuvenated United fought back after the break and levelled in 72 minutes through Webster's deflected effort.

United had Prince Buaben sent off after clashing with Anthony Stokes as Hibs moved a point clear in second place.

Hibs started in impressive fashion, despite the high winds that battered Easter Road and striker Stokes forced United goalkeeper Nicky Weaver into a fine save after 13 minutes.

The Irishman stuck the post from the rebound before it bounced to safety as the hosts looked to move three points clear of Rangers in second place.

Although both sides were keen to play the ball on the ground, the conditions saw more than a few passes go astray.

Nevertheless, Hibs continued to press for the opener and they took a deserved lead when Zemmama pounced on Darren Dods's pass before firing home with a fine left foot shot off the underside of the bar.

David Wotherspoon then tested Weaver with a thunderous drive as Hibs looked to double their lead.

United lacked width in the first half, with Chris Hogg and Sol Bamba able to deal easily with their infrequent forays forward.

Zemmama then looked to turn provider when his wicked free-kick found Stokes, but the Irishman headed a great chance wide.

Craig Levein's rejuvenated side were a different prospect after the break and Buaben fired a shot just wide of Graham Stack's goal, deciding against feeding team-mates Craig Conway or Danny Cadamarteri.

Morgaro Gomis, who had a quiet afternoon by his own high standards, failed to test Stack with a low shot as United searched for an equaliser.

Hibs should have made the points safe when Derek Riordan found himself free in the box three yards out following Liam Miller's cross but his effort came off his shin.

And the visitors made the Hibs striker pay for his profligacy when Webster's deflected effort struck the post before finding the net.

Buaben saw red late on after clashing with Stokes as both sides had to settle for a point, as Hibs moved a point clear of Rangers in second place.

Hibernian manager John Hughes:
"I said to my assistant Brian Rice that I hoped those (missed chances) didn't come back to haunt us, but they did.

"We didn't start the second half well but I felt we did enough to win the match.

"All credit to the boys, I'm delighted with them although disappointed with the result.

"I'd like to think the fans are seeing good stuff at the club and that was certainly on show in the first half.

"I'm not too sure why Buaben was sent off - whether it was for the tackle or the altercation after it.

"Getting players sent off spoils the game and you never want that. I think the game was played in a good spirit, and was well refereed."

Dundee United manager Craig Levein: "There were so many different factors we didn't get right in the first half that we're normally very good at.

"Maybe Hibs didn't allow us to play but in the second half we were much better.

"I could count on one hand since I've been at United the number of times I've raised my voice and today was one of them. They needed a good shake.

"But we got a response and we were 100 times better than in the first half.

"I was happy going in at half-time just a goal down. Hibs' play merited them being more than a goal in front.

"Whether we deserved a point, maybe we did. I didn't see the Buaben incident but thought it was a late tackle on him, I did see that.

"No doubt it will be on the television and once I see it I can react."
