Hamilton   0 - 2   St Johnstone

St Johnstone's Steven Anderson celebrates his opener as the Hamilton
Steven Anderson broke the deadlock at New Douglas Park

Steven Anderson scored on his debut as an impressive St Johnstone recorded their first league win of the season.

Goalscoring opportunities were few and far between in a first half dominated by fierce winds at New Douglas Park.

Defender Anderson headed the opener past Hamilton goalkeeper Tomas Cerny on the stroke of half time.

Saints went close through Kenny Deuchar's shot against a subdued Accies before Danny Grainger sealed victory with a cracking drive.

Saints looked the more impressive side in the early stages, with Steven Milne and Liam Craig both threatening.

In sharp contrast, Hamilton failed to test Alan Main until after the break.

And the hosts almost scored a freak equaliser eight minutes after the restart when Richard Hastings's corner found its way through a crowd of players and needed Anderson to clear off the line.

Accies manager Billy Reid made a double substitution on the hour mark, bringing on Leon Knight and Stuart Taylor for Trent McClenahan and Gary Mason.

But it was Saints who capped a fine afternoon with a fabulous goal to seal the points six minutes from time.

Grainger cut inside after a surging run and arrowed an unstoppable right foot shot into the top corner.

Marco Paixao curled a free-kick narrowly wide as Derek McInnes's men leapfrogged Hamilton to move two points clear in 10th spot in the table.

Hamilton Accies manager Billy Reid:
"Conditions were difficult and I don't think there was a lot of football played in the game," he said.

"They've scored just before half-time from a scrambled set piece. These margins are very tight.

"Our substitutions helped and we pinned them back without doing too much. We were susceptible to the breakaway and Danny Grainger scored a wonder goal.

"That's the difference between the two sides. In terms of effort and endeavour they gave us everything.

"But their goal on the stroke of half-time changes the whole team talk."

St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes:
"The result was the most important thing today and I thought we battled for it.

"We've got the three points today with probably our worst performance but it's the best feeling we've had.

"In the last 20 minutes I thought we could've carried more of a threat on the break, but how can I argue with Danny Grainger's goal? It was magnificent.

"And Alan Main hasn't really had anything of note to save. We're just delighted to send the fans home with three points and we hope they enjoy their weekend."
