Hamilton   0 - 0   Falkirk

Simon Mensing and Sean Lynch battle for possession
It was a game of few chances at Douglas Park

Relegation favourites Hamilton Accies and Falkirk fought out a drab goalless draw at Douglas Park.

Accies keeper Tomas Cerny was the busier goalkeeper with his first-half block from Kjartan Finnbogason's volley the pick of his saves.

Carl Finnigan did net a close-range header, only to see it ruled out for a foul on Accies defender Martin Canning.

The home side were brighter after the interval but could find a way through the stubborn Falkirk defence.

Falkirk, who remain bottom of the Scottish Premier League, had the best of the first half but they fell away after the break, leaving them no more deserving of a point than Accies.

Hamilton boss Billy Reid's plans suffered an early blow when, with less than a minute gone, striker Derek Lyle collapsed after his studs stuck in the turf and was taken straight to hospital in obvious discomfort.

Following a lengthy delay for treatment to the distressed Lyle, Finnbogason tried his luck from distance only to see his shot clear the crossbar.

Accies defender Richard Hastings then drew a fine save from Robert Olejnik with a curling free-kick.

Finnbogason came closer when Sean Lynch found space on the right-hand side of the box to cut the ball back to the Icelandic striker, whose first-time volley from 16 yards was brilliantly parried away by diving Cerny.

Accies rarely threatened but they carved out a half-chance when Hastings threw a searching cross from the left and substitute David Louhoungou looped his header from 12 yards over the bar.

There was a moment of controversy in the 38th minute when Finnigan had the ball in the Accies net from a Lynch cross.

Referee Willie Collum thought the Bairns' striker had fouled Canning in the process of heading past Cerny from six yards.

Falkirk might have taken the lead in the 50th minute when Danijel Marceta drove a left-footed cross in from the right to find Finnbogason racing in on goal.

The Bairns' striker failed to judge the speed of delivery and the ball came off his body six yards from goal before going past the post.

In the 57th minute Accies almost scored when Louhoungou's pass fortuitously landed at the feet of Mickael Antoine-Curier via a deflection off Jackie McNamara and Brian McLean's slip.

The on-loan striker drove in to the box and unleashed a shot but the ball took a nick off Falkirk stopper Darren Barr and arced over Olejnik and on to the roof of the net.

A game low on quality petered out in the closing stages, with Hamilton happy to take a point which lifts them above St Johnstone into 10th spot.

Hamilton manager Billy Reid:
"Falkirk were certainly the better side in the first half and we were better in the second.

"My only thoughts at the moment are for Derek Lyle. He'll be out for the season after injuring his cruciate ligament.

"It's a sickening blow for it to happen in the first minute. It's not an excuse but it did affect the players.

"All credit to Falkirk, they started the game really well. I watched them the the other night and they play with enthusiasm and try to pass the ball.

"We forced the issue after the break and we've taken a point to steady the ship a bit."

Falkirk manager Eddie May:
"We've been getting better every week but unfortunately we haven't taken our chances today.

"We'll keep being positive and are definitely moving in the right direction. Hamilton are a very difficult team to beat.

"I thought we were better than them today. I'm delighted at another clean sheet and our overall performance."
