Dundee Utd   0 - 1   Motherwell

Ross Forbes celebrates scoring for Motherwell against Dundee United
Forbes (left) grabbed his sixth goal of the season to give Well victory

Motherwell triumphed at Tannadice to end Dundee United's unbeaten record in the Scottish Premier League.

Lukas Jutkiewicz's volley drew a save from Nicky Weaver as the visitors threatened to take a first-half lead.

Ross Forbes broke the deadlock from the penalty spot on 66 minutes after Sean Dillon had felled Jim O'Brien.

And Well goalkeeper John Ruddy was in outstanding form to prevent Darren Dods, Danny Cadamarteri and Andy Webster from equalising.

The result preserves Motherwell's unbeaten league record, as Jim Gannon's side posted a third consecutive shut-out.

There were few chances in the opening stages but a mix-up between Sean Dillon and Weaver almost resulted in a bizarre own goal before the danger was averted.

Cadamarteri and David Goodwillie combined with latter heading wide of the Motherwell goal from his striker partner's cross.

Steve Jennings was booked and then replaced by Jutkiewicz, who quickly tested Weaver.

The on-loan Everton forward turned and fired towards goal only for the United stopper to make an impressive save.

Almost immediately, United countered but Goodwillie could not direct his effort on target after an enterprising run.

Jim O'Brien drew a save from Weaver deep into first-half injury time.

The lack of fluency that had dogged the opening period continued after the break as both sides struggled to find an opening.

Tannadice full-back Paul Dixon suffered a head knock and had to be replaced by Mihael Kovacevic, who slotted in at right-back with Dillon moving over to the left.

And it was from that position that Dillon committed the foul on former United player O'Brien that gave Motherwell the opportunity to take the lead from the spot.

With O'Brien having missed a penalty last week, Forbes took the responsibility and beat Weaver from 12 yards, low to the keeper's left.

United tried to restore parity quickly but goalkeeper John Ruddy pulled of a series of stunning saves to keep Well's lead intact.

First, the on-loan Everton keeper blocked Dods' effort before Cadamarteri and Webster were also denied from point-blank range.

The home side continued to press for a leveller but a series of late corners failed to yield a score and Prince Buaben's long-range effort was palmed over by Ruddy.

Dundee United manager Craig Levein:
"We lost a game that, at the very worst, we should've got a point in. But even if we had got a point, I would've been disappointed with that.

"I didn't think we performed anywhere near the levels that we have done in recent weeks and the quality that we served up today wasn't good enough so I can't have any arguments about losing it.

"The game never flowed because of the lack of quality.

"It was an error on our part that cost us the game and we just have to accept it.

"We should've scored. I'm a bit disappointed that we didn't put the ball in the back of the net and that, of course, might have made a massive difference to the outcome of the game."

Motherwell manager Jim Gannon:
"I'm very happy with the three points, it's a massive three points for us. It was a great effort from the boys. As a team we worked extremely hard.

"Unfortunately the flow of the game was disrupted by a lot of elements today and it was a difficult game to watch.

"Great credit to Ross Forbes today, he took his penalty very well. Jim O'Brien's done brilliantly for us.

"I was up the other end of the pitch and it was hard to see, but they looked like magnificent saves by John Ruddy. He didn't have an awful lot to do but during that 10 seconds, he was outstanding.

"The players have gelled so well. They are taking things off the training ground and adding a little bit extra of their own qualities."
