Kilmarnock   0 - 0   Rangers

Kilmarnock and Rangers both finished with 10 men in a drab Scottish Premier League draw at Rugby Park.

Pedro Mendes was sent off for the visitors after picking up two yellow cards before the break in what had been an otherwise tame opening period.

Danny Invincibile twice failed to take advantage of a slip in the Rangers defence and Jamie Hamill struck the woodwork for the home side.

John Fleck had Rangers' best effort before Manuel Pascali also saw red.

Mendes went into referee Steve Conroy's book for a late challenge on Craig Bryson as both sides struggled to take a foothold in the game.

Kris Boyd, playing against his former club, escaped punishment after an untidy collision with Wright, who required treatment for the resulting head knock.

Another former Rugby Park player, Steven Naismith, blazed over from the edge of the box after the ball had fallen invitingly but the Scotland international faired better with his next attempt, goalkeeper Mark Brown improvising well with his foot to divert the deflected shot away from goal.

Mendes was given his marching orders on 43 minutes after another careless lunge on Bryson two minutes before half-time, the Portuguese midfielder becoming the third Rangers player to be dismissed in the SPL this season.

The decision provoked a furious reaction from the Rangers bench and manager Walter Smith was eventually sent to stand by referee Conroy.

Rangers quickly went on the offensive and Brown did well to beat away a dangerous Sasa Papac cross.

Boyd was booked for scything tackle on Tim Clancy, who clutched his elbow in pain and had to be replaced by Gavin Skelton early in the second half.

Hamill curled a bouncing shot towards the Rangers goal causing keeper Allan McGregor to nervously usher the ball wide.

Danny Invincibile then missed two glorious opportunities to put the home side ahead after McCulloch had mistakenly headed Sammon's cross out of McGregor's reach.

The Australian forward's header was blocked near the line by Papac and, from the rebound, Invincibile hammered over with the goal gaping.

Allan McGregor and Jamie Hamill
Hamill came closest to scoring with the woorwork coming to Rangers' rescue

Killie continued to press Rangers back and Jamie Hamill's volley from Skelton's deep centre was tipped onto the post by McGregor.

Rangers went straight to the other end and John Fleck drew a save from Brown with a swerving shot.

Kevin Thomson and Kenny Miller came on for Nacho Novo and Boyd and Jerome Rothen later replaced Naismith but the reshuffles failed to ignite Rangers' forward advances with Mehdi Taouil coming on for Invincibile.

Pascali, who had earlier been booked for a late challenge on Novo, received his second caution nine minutes from the end for pulling the shirt of Steven Davis.

But, despite the loss of the Italian, Killie created another opening when Sammon turned and shot in the box, forcing McGregor into another important block before the match petered out with a series of bookings late on.

Kilmarnock manager Jim Jefferies:
"We set out a certain way, we had a big physical strong side out today. Rangers probably had good possession. We contained them.

"I thought in the second half, we totally dominated it and we had the best two chances of the second half. The one that came off the post, I don't know how it didn't go in and Danny doesn't know he missed the sitter.

"Apart from that, our goalkeeper's not had a save to make so I was really pleased with the performance.

"This was a great opportunity. We had better chances than Rangers today. You've got to stick the ball in the net and if you don't, it's not easy to win games but I couldn't fault the players today, I thought they were excellent. That should give them a lot of confidence.

"Some of the bookings just weren't warranted. Other than that, I thought the referee had a decent game."

Rangers manager Walter Smith:
"In the sense that we had to play the majority of the game with 10 men, we've got to be happy enough that we managed to get the point.

"I didn't think Pedro Mendes' first booking was a booking. I felt it was a rather innocuous challenge in the first place.

"When you do get a yellow card then you're on a bit of thin ice, you've got to watch what you're doing and I wasn't sure about the second one either. I didn't think they were bad fouls.

"The referee's got to do what he sees as the right thing to do. He did that.

"Kilmarnock had the best of the opportunities to win the game.

"We're disappointed with the game turned over all but not unhappy with the point."
