Kilmarnock   1 - 2   St Mirren

Stephen McGinn celebrates in Kilmarnock
McGinn scored twice for St Mirren after the break at Rugby Park

Two goals from Stephen McGinn gave St Mirren victory as they recovered from conceding an early goal to defeat Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.

Connor Sammon ran on to a clever through-ball by David Fernandez and slotted the ball into the far corner from 20 yards after four minutes.

But McGinn volleyed the equaliser from 10 yards three minutes after the break.

Killie looked the likelier team, but McGinn stunned the hosts by firing home a deflected shot on 69 minutes.

Kilmarnock fans were shocked before kick-off with the news that talisman and new captain Kevin Kyle had suffered a knee injury that will also mean the striker misses Scotland's upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Jamie Hamill and Danny Invincibile were both out injured, with Manuel Pascali, David Fernandez and the fit-again Garry Hay coming back.

But that did not stop the home side opening the scoring in the early exchanges, with Sammon's third goal in two games.

The powerful Irishman ran on to Fernandez pass that caught the Saints defence square and coolly found the far corner from 20 yards.

St Mirren, for whom Hugh Murray had started instead of Tom Brighton in midfield, settled after a disorganised start.

But Kilmarnock continued to take the game to their Paisley opponents with Sammon impressively leading the line.

Fernandez cut inside from the left and fired a shot that Paul Gallacher held and Gavin Skelton's cross just evaded Sammon following good build-up play.

Killie goalkeeper Alan Combe's first real test came in the 32nd minute when he dived low to hold Billy Mehmet's 30-yard free-kick, but the home side remained in firm control.

However, Kilmarnock's impressive first-half efforts were undone within three minutes of the restart when McGinn scored the equaliser.

Hay made a mess of a clearance from David Barron's deep cross and Andy Dorman cut the ball back for McGinn to smash into the top corner with his weaker right foot.

Pascali was wide with a deflected volley and a header as Killie sought an immediate reply and Gallacher pulled off a excellent diving save from Sammon's powerful first-time effort from a difficult angle.

St Mirren stunned the hosts again when Dorman's cross fell for McGinn on the edge of the box and his low shot deflected off Tim Clancy and past Combe at his near-post.

Frazer Wright's header was inadvertently blocked by Michael Higdon from Craig Bryson's corner as Kilmarnock quickly reasserted themselves as an attacking force.

But, with St Mirren now having something to defend, the home side did not have the space to play as they did in the first half and the Buddies repelled all the late pressure.

Kimarnock manager Jim Jefferies:

"I thought we were the best team in the first half and we lost a shocking goal after the break.

"That gave St Mirren a lift but we came again and I thought they got their second goal against the run of play as well.

"I thought we played really well and it was an injustice not to take anything from the game.

"Our goalkeeper has not had much to do and they've scored two goals."

St Mirren manager Gus MacPherson:

"The players knew they had let themselves down in the first half and they did something about it.

"That's what you want as a manager; players who take responsibility.

"We're never going to be a team of individuals, we have to work hard as a group."

On being linked with the vacancy at Colchester: "I know nothing about it but it shows we are doing something right here."
