Dundee Utd   2 - 1   Falkirk

Danny Cadamarteri celebrates opening the scoring
Cadamarteri opened the scoring for Dundee United against Falkirk

Goals from Danny Cadamarteri and David Goodwillie eased Dundee United to victory over Falkirk.

Goodwillie and new Falkirk signing Kjartan Finnbogason went close in a first half dominated by United.

Ryan Flynn was denied by United keeper Nicky Weaver when he should have scored early after the break.

And Cadamarteri swept the ball home seconds later, Goodwillie fired in after 56 minutes, but Finnbogason broke clear to pull one back for the Bairns.

United had made four changes from Tuesday's Co-operative Insurance Cup win away to Alloa, recalling Cadamarteri, Weaver, Andy Webster and Danny Swanson.

And, with United back at full strength and Falkirk playing deep and on the break, it was the home side who were on the front foot from the kick-off.

Bairns goalkeeper Robert Olejnik had to be alert to parry Cadamarteri's close-range snapshot that flicked off Goodwillie.

Kjartan Finnbogason had been handed his Falkirk debut after the completion of his loan move from Sandefjord and could have got off the mark after 17 minutes.

Goalkeeper Nicky Weaver failed to hold a Burton O'Brien corner, but the Icelandic striker's drive from six yards was blocked by Darren Dodds.

Finnbogason was then controversially flagged offside when clean through and O'Brien fired narrowly wide as Falkirk grew in confidence.

United should have taken a 35th-minute lead when Swanson tricked his way into the box and Olejnik could only parry his shot into the path of Goodwillie.

However, Finnigan denied his opposing forward on the line with a desperate block.

Swanson was unable to connect properly with a Dixon cross to the far post and Cadamarteri blazed high and wide when well placed as United continued to dominate.

David Goodwillie celebrates putting United 2-0 ahead
Goodwillie scored the second goal of the day at Tannadice

David Robertson replaced injured namesake Stephen for United as the second half kicked off.

As United re-organised, Falkirk should have taken the lead when Scott Arfield released Flynn through the middle.

However, with two players in support, the midfielder tried to go it alone and his tame shot was saved by Weaver at the second attempt.

The Bairns paid for that within seconds as Cadamarteri swept the ball home at the back post following a dangerous low cross from Swanson.

United went further ahead when Goodwillie finished clinically after powering into the box.

Falkirk suffered another blow when they lost Tam Scobbie to injury after Cadamarteri pushed the defender as they raced for a through ball.

Scobbie crashed into his own goalkeeper and Chris Mitchell came on, with Alex McDonald also replacing Jackie McNamara.

It looked like United would see out the game with ease until Finnigan played the ball through for Finnbogason to round the goalkeeper and score, but the Bairns could not find an equaliser they hardly deserved.

Dundee United manager Craig Levein:

"We knew Falkirk would work hard in training to work on ways to prevent us scoring and they were very stuffy.

"But, although they had a good chance in the first half when we had a good block on the line, I thought we deserved to win the game as we had the better chances.

"We played okay without setting the heather on fire, but that is the kind of game that we might have drawn last season.

"We were comfortable and then got a decision against us that was a bit unfair and that changes the complexion of the the last 10 or 15 minutes.

"David Robertson got a dead-leg that is fairly deep, while Swanie and Cady also picked up knocks."

Falkirk manager Eddie May:

"We had a great chance before they scored and it just shows that goals change games at this level.

"They were two sloppy goals to concede and I've told the boys responsible that it is not acceptable.

"We then scored and, to be honest, I thought it was offside, but we take it.

"We had a few opportunities late on and did not take them, but we were playing a team who I think will finish third this season.

"Tam Scobbie took a head knock but should be fine and shouldn't need to go to hospital."
