St Mirren continue the search for a league win at St Mirren Park following a lifeless draw with Dundee United.

Billy Mehmet and Stephen McGinn came close for the home side in the first half and United's Darren Dods was denied by the woodwork.

The second-half produced a similar dearth of chances, although St Mirren seemed the more eager of the two sides.

Dods was lucky not to concede an own-goal in the second-half when Garry Brady fired across the face of goal.

The hosts were aiming to improve upon last week's defeat to Hibernian and St Mirren manager Gus MacPherson drafted in Hugh Murray along with Craig Dargo, while Craig Levein named the same United side that beat Hearts on Monday night.

United's Danny Swanson fired in a weak free-kick that Paul Gallacher collected, then Jack Ross released Brady at the other end, but his shot from a tight angle was nodded to safety by Dods.

United had a decent penalty shout denied when Swanson went to ground in the box under pressure from Murray.

Saints could have snatched the opener when Billy Mehmet nodded a cross wide of target.

Danny Cadamarteri was denied by Gallacher who smothered his low drive after a decent run into the box.

The woodwork prevented United from taking the lead when Lee Dixon's corner was met by Dods and his half-volley rattled the underside of the bar.

With half-time rapidly approaching, St Mirren had one last attempt at grabbing an opener when Andy Dorman lined up a volley for McGinn only to see it flash across the face of goal.

The second-half failed to produce much in the way of chances, although as the hour mark approached, David Goodwillie had an effort at goal from just outside the penalty box which went wide of the left-hand post.

Moments later, Brady fired in a cross that United keeper Nicky Weaver comfortably collected.

In the final 20 minutes of the match, St Mirren continued to push for an opener, with good efforts from Ross and McGinn, but the stalemate remained.

Dods almost conceded an own-goal 10 minutes from the final whistle when he cleared Brady's shot off the inside of the United post.

Michael Higdon headed wide of the United goal before Brady tested Weaver yet again.

St Mirren manager Gus MacPherson:
"I think, especially against a team of the quality of Dundee United, we knew it was going to be a tough game for us.

"But I thought we coped well and we played well at times. We also created good chances.

"The defences both played well, but both teams hit the woodwork and it always seemed like avoiding a mistake was going to be vital.

"We can only encourage the players to play in that manner. we were positive and we try to attack as much as possible."

Dundee United manager Craig Levein:
"We tried to do the same things we did on Monday, but St Mirren stifled us - they didn't let us play.

"It was two well organised teams that knew what they were doing.

"It was extremely difficult today to create any opportunities, and I think Gus will agree a draw was a fair result, and some of our best players were our defenders.

"There was nothing that look like getting us a goal, and other than Dodsy clearing the goal and hitting the bar, St Mirren were limited with their goal-scoring attempts as well."
