Kilmarnock   3 - 0   Hamilton

Kilmarnock striker Kevin Kyle
Kyle's goals set Killie on their way to victory at Rugby Park

Kilmarnock recorded a comfortable home win over Hamilton Academical on the opening day of the Scottish Premier League season.

Kevin Kyle escaped marker Marvin Andrews to slide in and volley the opener before half-time.

Kyle scored his second seven minutes into the second half with an impressive strike past Tomas Cerny.

Jamie Hamill completed the scoring with a low drive from the edge of the penalty area on 68 minutes.

Connor Sammon and Kyle threatened early in the match as the home side looked to gain a quick advantage.

Izzy Iriekpen, one of six debutants on show for the visitors, then headed wide from a corner despite being unchallenged.

Gavin Skelton came close to opening the scoring when he sent an angled drive wide of the Hamilton goal on 17 minutes.

Cameron Bell deputised in goal for Killie in the absence of Alan Combe and was required to parry Richard Offiong's shot, with Flavio Paixao firing the rebound into the side-netting.

The breakthrough came on 33 minutes when Garry Hay's free-kick picked out Kyle, who lashed the ball over goalkeeper Cerny and into the net.

The visitors went in search of a leveller early in the second half and Iriekpen had a header cleared off the line after Luis Rubiales' corner had struck the crossbar.

And within minutes, Killie had doubled their lead with Kyle once again the marksman.

The striker picked up a loose ball and curled the ball into the far corner from distance.

Mehdi Taouil's ambitious effort from wide on the right went over the Hamilton bar as Killie continued to pin the visitors back.

Accies were struggling to work their way back into the match and substitute David Louhoungou and Offiong could not find the target with half-chances.

Hamill sealed victory for Killie after being found in space by Sammon's pass and sliding a composed finish past Cerny with the Hamilton defence posted missing.

A further effort from Taouil was blocked in the six-yard box before Accies almost pulled one back.

Stuart Mills' pass found Offiong, whose snap shot struck the post and rebounded to safety with 15 minutes remaining.

And as the match wound down Grant Evans prevented Craig Bryson from grabbing a fourth and Simon Ford headed over for the home side late on.

Kilmarnock manager Jim Jefferies: "Three-nil is a terrific scoreline. Kevin (Kyle) has come up with a couple of great goals, particularly the second one.

"I thought it was a really good team performance. Connor Sammon worked them and it's good to see him learning. He's only young. Today he was a real handful along with Kevin.

"The balance of the side was very good. It was an emphatic win today but Hamilton have three boys to come back from suspension.

"We'll dedicate the win to Gary Locke. We'd like to have him back but we're waiting to hear."

Hamilton manager Billy Reid: "I'm obviously disappointed to lose so heavily. We were probably the better side for the first 15-20 minutes of the game.

"We spoke about set pieces before the game, about picking Kevin Kyle up, and we didn't do that.

"In defeat you learn a lot about your players and yourself.

"We've got five, six, seven or so players to come back so we won't panic."
