Celtic defender Gary Caldwell has been named the Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League player of the season.

The 27-year-old, who was also named the Scottish Football Writers' Player of the Year, said winning the SPL title would make it a memorable campaign.

"It's always nice to get awards," said the Scotland international.

Hearts boss Csaba Laszlo was named manager of the season, while Hibs striker Steven Fletcher earned the young player award.

Caldwell has been a regular under manager Gordon Strachan and has shown great consistency in the centre of defence alongside captain Stephen McManus.

The former Hibs defender said he was delighted to accept the award, but was also keen to mention the important role his team-mates played.

"It's good to get some reward for your personal performances," he said.

"But football is a team game and there's still a reward I want for the team at the end of the season. That would really cap my season off.

"I think it would be my worst season here if we don't win the league because we have won it for the last two seasons."

Celtic midfielder Marc Crosas won goal of the season for his long-range strike during Celtic's 7-0 win over St Mirren in February.

And Motherwell keeper Graeme Smith earned the award for save of the season after stopping Dundee United midfielder Danny Swanson's effort during a 1-1 draw in March.

Laszlo, who took the managerial reins at Tynecastle in July 2008, has steered Hearts to third place in his first season in the SPL as they aim to secure a place in next season's Europa League.

Romania-born Laszlo succeeded caretaker boss Stevie Frail after leaving his role as Uganda coach. He also enjoyed managerial spells at Ferencváros and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Fletcher has been an impressive performer this season, scoring 11 league goals for the Edinburgh outfit.

The 22-year-old has twice been named the young player of the month during the current campaign.

SPL chairman Lex Gold said: "Our clubs are working hard on and off the field to raise standards, and these awards recognise those efforts in what has been another dramatic season."
