Three former Scottish Premier League players have been fined and suspended for gambling on football in Australia.

Former Hibernian and Dundee Utd player Brebner was suspended for two weeks and fined £1400 after betting against his side when they faced Chonburi.

Craig Moore and Kevin Muscat were fined a similar amount for betting on games not involving their own team.

Australian FA chief executive Ben Buckley said: "We're extremely disappointed in the players."

The AFA received notification from the betting agency Betfair that 31-year-old Scotsman Brebner, who began his career with Manchester United, had wagered more than £270 on his Melbourne Victory team to lose against Thai outfit Chonburi in the Asian Champions League - which they did 3-1.

All three players also received further £900 suspended fines.

Queensland captain Moore and Melbourne captain Muscat - both former Rangers players and Socceroos skippers - did not bet on matches involving their own team but were censured because AFA rules state that any form of betting by players on football matches is not allowed..

These fines and the playing suspensions should serve notice to all players that any form of betting by players on football matches has no place in football

Buckley said the FFA, in conjunction with A-League clubs and the Australian Professional Footballers Association, would launch an awareness campaign to ensure players were well-versed on the risks of gambling.

"These fines and the playing suspensions should serve notice to all players that any form of betting by players on football matches has no place in football and will not be tolerated," Buckley said.

He said all the players and clubs involved had accepted the sanctions imposed and would not appeal.

Brebner left Dundee United in June 2006 and later joined Melbourne after a successful trial.

Moore played for Rangers from 1993 to 1998 and also enjoyed spells at Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Borussia Mönchengladbach before moving back to his native Australia.

Muscat played for the Ibrox club between 2002/03 and also featured for Wolves, Millwall and Palace during his time in the UK.
