Hibernian 2-0 Hamilton Accies

Derek Riordan scores for Hibernian
Riordan slams the ball home to give Hibs the lead

Hibernian overcame a spirited Hamilton Accies side to record a second successive SPL victory.

Substitute Derek Riordan, who had replaced the injured Steven Fletcher, got the game's opening goal shortly before half-time.

Hamilton almost equalised after the interval when Richard Offiong's effort came back off the crossbar.

Captain Rob Jones headed Hibs' clinching goal two minutes from the end after meeting Riordan's corner.

The result consolidates Hibernian's fifth place position in the table with Accies now three points adrift at the bottom.

Fletcher's chipped cross was headed into Cerny's arms by Colin Nish's looping header as the home side enjoyed the better of the early chances.

But Hibs were dealt a blow when Fletcher was taken off following a challenge by David Elebert.

Hamilton's James McCarthy came close in the 21st minute, beating two men and firing in a shot which Yves Ma-Kalambay tipped wide.

At the other end Sol Bamba's header from Alan O'Brien's corner came back off the post and Nish could not find the net with the rebound.

Nish then tried to chip the stranded Cerny but the striker's shot went narrowly over the bar.

Jones' header from a free-kick had Cerny at full stretch as the goalkeeper pushed the ball over for a corner.

The visitors should have been in front after 40 minutes when David van Zanten's attempted clearance presented Simon Mensing with a chance to shoot inside the penalty area but Ma-Kalambay blocked the Hamilton player's effort.

Hibs took the lead when Steven Thicot released Murray on the left and his low centre was fired into the net by Riordan from close range.

Hamilton went in search of a quick equaliser and Trent McClenahan's corner caused problems for Ma-Kalambay.

Nish missed another chance after being set up by Riordan, Cerny doing well to block the striker's shot shortly before the first half drew to a close.

Offiong struck the woodwork early in the second half with a shot from 25 yards which had the beating of Ma-Kalambay.

Derek Lyle then saw a curling effort drift past Ma-Kalambay's right-hand post before James McArthur's shot was deflected wide.

Ma-Kalambay spilled McClenahan's shot and Bamba had to act quickly to clear the danger.

Hibs went back on the offensive and Jones hit the post from Chris Hogg's cross with Bamba inches away from latching on to the rebound.

But Jones eventually got on the score-sheet in the closing stages with a powerful header that Cerny could not keep out.

Hibernian manager Mixu Paatelainen:
"I'm delighted with the result. It is difficult to play against Hamilton, they've got good players and they flood the midfield.

"The first goal was a fantastic move, Ian Murray getting forward and that's what Derek Riordan does best, a tap-in in front of goal.

"He (Rirodan) might not be absolutely 100% sharp but he's scoring regularly so he's a fantastic asset for us.

"(Steven Fletcher's) injury is nothing serious thankfully. It was a very, very heavy knock. It happens unfortunately."

Hamilton Accies manager Billy Reid:
"On another day, we probably could've taken a point.

"Second half, for long, long spells, we were the better football team. We made chances. Hibs were always a threat on the break.

"I couldn't ask my players for any more than what they have given me. I think some of our play in the second half was brilliant.

"James McArthur controlled the middle of the park and James McCarthy, at times, was sublime."
