Two late goals gave Aberdeen an SPL victory over a stubborn St Mirren side.

Saints goalkeeper Mark Howard saved well from a Lee Miller free-kick in a frustrating first half for the Pittodrie side.

Andrew Considine broke the deadlock in the 80th minute, converting Mark Kerr's cross with a shot high into the net.

Sone Aluko showed pace and composure to seal Aberdeen's win one minute from the end after being set up by Richard Foster's pass.

The match was subject to a short delay following traffic problems in Aberdeen city centre.

Both sides were looking to recover from weekend defeats with the home side having been beaten by Dundee United and St Mirren losing at home to Hearts.

Dons goalkeeper Jamie Langfield comfortably held Billy Mehmet's header before Sone Aluko saw his shot towards the Saints goal claimed by Howard.

Aberdeen defender Andrew Considine then met Kerr's accurate cross but headed straight at the St Mirren keeper.

The visitors had a narrow escape after 19 minutes when Howard missed Charlie Mulgrew's corner and Scott Severin's goal-bound shot was blocked by his own team-mate Darren Mackie.

Slack defending at a free-kick almost cost St Mirren when Miller's header from Mulgrew's cross was blocked and Considine was unable to make the crucial contact on the rebound.

As the half-hour mark approached, Mackie sent a teasing ball towards Miller but Scott Cuthbert cleared well under pressure.

Howard was booked six minutes before half-time when he handled the ball outside of his box as Mackie lurked.

From the resultant free-kick, Miller's powerful shot was blocked by the goalkeeper.

The Dons continued to put their visitors under pressure at the start of the second half but were continually frustrated by a dogged St Mirren defence.

Jim Hamilton set up strike partner Mehmet for a shot but Zander Diamond slid in to clear the danger.

Hugh Murray then forced Langfield into a save as St Mirren tested Aberdeen on the counter-attack.

The home side made the breakthrough with 10 minutes remaining when Kerr got to the by-line and crossed low towards Considine, who produced a stylish finish.

It was the defender's third league goal for Aberdeen, with the previous two also coming against St Mirren.

Aluko sealed Aberdeen's win after outpacing the St Mirren defence to fire low past Howard.

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood:
"We've played a lot better than that and lost games and we got the breaks with the goals.

"All credit to Gus MacPherson's team, they knocked it about very well without really having a finishing touch. I think if they had had that then the result would've been different.

"Mark Kerr has done magnificently for Andrew Considine's goal and Sone Aluko has so much pace, you just have to hit the space.

"Defensively I was very happy. It's great night all round to us but we know we can play better."

St Mirren manager Gus MacPherson:
"We defended well and were organised. Then we looked to carry a threat on the break.

"For a period in the second half, we were the only team that looked like scoring and we felt comfortable.

"We just seemed to panic in the final third where you want to create the chances.

"We won our fair share of individual battles all over the park and had an impact on the game. It's cruel but that's football."
