Motherwell's David Clarkson added to relegated Livingston's misery with the winning goal at Almondvale.

The striker pounced to head over Roddy McKenzie and into the net after the goalkeeper failed to gather a cross.

Robert Snodgrass had earlier been denied by a superb save from Well goalkeeper Graeme Smith and then missed another chance to give Livi the lead.

Smith also made a point-blank save to deny Colin Healy, but Livi had to clear twice off the line before the winner.

It justified wholesale changes by Motherwell boss Terry Butcher, who brought in Steven McGarry, Marc Fitzpatrick, Mark Reynolds, Paul Quinn and Robert Donnelly.

Home manager John Robertson also showed his fustration at his side's recent performance by making five changes to his relegated team.

There was a first-team debut for 19-year-old striker Gary Miller, who replaced the injured Sam Morrow.

Snodgrass, Paul Tierney, Steve Hislop and Martin Scott also came into the starting line-up.

And Livingston created the first real chance of the game after Hislop's effort from a low cross was blocked.

Snodgrass picked up the rebound, but his shot was brilliantly saved by the feet of goalkeeper Smith from close range.

Motherwell had offered little in attack until Jim Hamilton's neat flick set up Brian Kerr after 26 minutes, but the midfielder dragged his shot wide of McKenzie's goal.

Hislop set up the onrushing Snodgrass at the other end, but the striker lifted his shot well over the bar from 16 yards eight minutes before the break.

The hosts continued to look the more dangerous and Healy was guilty of missing a sitter on the hour mark, although credit went to Smith for making a point-blank save.

Scott's deep cross was headed across the six-yard box, but Healy's low shot was brilliantly blocked by the goalkeeper.

Motherwell's latest escape seemed to spur the visitors on and Livingston defender Miller twice had to clear the ball off his line before Clarkson made the breakthrough following a Martyn Corrigan cross.

Jim Paterson sent a powerful shot just wide as Well took heart - and control - from their goal and held out for victory.
