Darren Young scored the winning goal

A last-gasp diving header from Darren Young gave Dunfermline Athletic a victory that leaves Dundee United at the bottom of the SPL table.

Mark Wilson put United ahead from the penalty spot after seven minutes, when Jim McIntyre was felled by goalkeeper Derek Stillie.

But Andy Tod replied for the visitors when he converted Richie Byrne's superb left-wing cross.

Jason Scotland struck the Pars' post, but Young settled the game late on.

United manager Ian McCall shuffled his pack of strikers, with Jim McIntyre and Scotland replacing James Grady and Collin Samuel.

Algeria international Karim Kerker started ahead of Billy Dodds in midfield.

Dunfermline's Derek Young and Greg Shields both failed late fitness tests, so Darren Young came in for his brother in midfield, while Andy Tod filled in at the back.

Only a magnificent headed clearance from Richie Byrne prevented McIntyre giving United an early lead from a Barry Robson cross.

Pressure from the home side paid off after seven minutes following a mix-up between Scott Wilson and Andrius Skerla at the heart of the Pars defence.

McIntyre waltzed through unchallenged before being brought down by goalkeeper Derek Stillie and Mark Wilson made no mistake from the spot.

But the Pars struck back a minute later when Byrne crossed beautifully from the left for Tod to bring Hay's side level from close range.

United responded and McInnes drove the ball just wide of Stillie's goal and Kerkar headed over when he should have done better.

Dunfermline worked their way into the game and good work from Byrne and Simon Donnelly set up Barry Nicholson, whose fierce drive was deflected just wide of the United goal.

Scotland turned Wilson inside out and only a good save from Stillie kept the scores level.

Dunfermline midfielder Gary Mason drilled in a decent effort from the edge of the box that required good handling from goalkeeper Paul Jarvie.

Donnelly's slide-rule pass sent Young clear and, with just Jarvie to beat, he pulled his shot wide from 14 yards out.

McIntyre twisted and turned on the edge of the Dunfermline box and he curled a terrific left-foot shot that Stillie turned over with his fingertips.

The powerful Scotland shrugged off a couple of defenders before cracking the crossbar with a thunderous shot after the break.

Young exchanged passes with Craig Brewster on the edge of the United box and the midfielder's strike at goal needed a desperate block from David McCracken to clear the danger.

The midfielder had the final say with the winner in stoppage time.
