Rangers came from a goal down at half time to take all three points from East End Park.
Novo celebrates his winner
Dunfermline went ahead through a sublime curling effort from Craig Brewster after 22 minutes.
But Jean-Alain Boumsong headed Rangers level shortly after half-time from a Fernando Ricksen cross.
Ricksen was fouled by Andrius Skerla to give Rangers a penalty and Nacho Novo beat Derek Stillie from the spot to give Rangers the win.
Stefan Klos was the first keeper called into action as he saved comfortably from Simon Donnelly.
Brewster and Barry Nicholson both had shots off target before Novo fired into the sidenetting.
But in the 22nd minute, Brewster gave Dunfermline the lead with a fantastic strike.
Donnelly played the ball forward to Nicholson, who backheeled the ball into Brewster's path and the striker curled it past Klos from more than 20 yards out.
Pars keeper Derek Stillie was immediately required to protect that lead, as he
back-pedalled to palm a Novo header behind.
Brewster (left) is congratulated on his stunning strike
Bob Malcolm shot over from long-range on a couple of occasions while Stillie was relieved to see the ball go behind for a goal-kick after he had hit a clearance straight at Novo.
Butler cut inside from the left to fire in a low drive from 20 yards that Klos was behind once again.
At the other end, Marvin Andrews saw a shot blocked and Dado Prso fired the rebound goalwards only to see Scott Wilson get in the way.
Within two minutes of the restart Rangers were level when Ricksen planted a
free-kick on to the head of Boumsong from six yards out.
Then Ricksen found Novo on the left and he cut inside past Shields to fire a low
drive, which Stillie touched on to his right-hand post.
But the visitors took the lead when Ricksen was chopped down in the box by Andrius Skerla and Novo made no mistake from the spot to give his side a 57th-minute lead.
Novo fired a volley wide at the back post from a yard out after Ricksen had fired a
free-kick in at pace and Boumsong headed over from the corner to waste a great chance to kill off the Pars.
Stillie produced a superb save to keep a Prso header out and, at the other end, Malcolm was his side's saviour with a header off the line after a fierce Scott Thomson drive had seemed destined for the net.
