Dundee took the spoils in the first derby of the season against city rivals United at Tannadice.
The visitors' first goal had an element of controversy about it as they were awarded a soft penalty for David McCracken's challenge on Iain Anderson.
Steve Lovell's spot kick just eluded the grasp of Tony Bullock.
Lovell set up John Sutton for the second, who poked the ball past Bullock and though Alan Archibald headed a late consolation, Dundee were worth the win.
The first shot on goal was manufactured by United after 11 minutes.
Jim McIntyre's cutback found Billy Dodds, but his shot on the turn from seven yards was well pushed away by Derek Soutar.
Dundee took the lead in controversial circumstances in the 17th minute.
Anderson fell in the box under the challenge of McCracken but though there was little contact, referee Hugh Dallas awarded a penalty.
Lovell's spot kick was not the best but though Bullock got a hand to it, the ball squirming into the net.

United could have had an equaliser in the 32nd minute when Archibald drove the ball goalwards only for Brent Sancho to make a good block.
Soutar pulled off another fine save, this time from Barry Robson who hit a powerful volley from the edge of the area only to see the keeper parry the ball behind for a corner.
The second half was only two minutes old when the visitors doubled their lead.
Lovell showed good strength to win the ball on the right and his low cross was met at the near post by Sutton who poked the ball past Bullock.
Dodds came close twice within a minute when he saw a header cleared off the line by Anderson and when Dundee failed to clear, the veteran striker hooked the ball just over the bar.
United sub Jason Scotland should have reduced the deficit after 55 minutes when McIntyre's header found him in plenty space, but from 12 yards out he blasted the ball off the top of the bar.
Dodds was only inches away again six minutes later when he got on the end of Stuart Duff's cross, but his header drifted wide.
Dundee weathered the storm and could have scored a third after 83 minutes when Calum McDonald fired in a fierce shot from a tight angle that Bullock had to get down quickly to keep out.
Sutton chipped a late effort just over before Archibald headed powerfully past Soutar in injury time.
