Daniel Andersson was the Hibernian hero as the Edinburgh side moved up to fifth in the Scottish Premier League.

The Swedish goalkeeper denied Charlie Miller and Billy Dodds in quick succession after the United men were left clear on goal.

United had taken charge after a young Hibs side dominated the first half but began to tire after the break.

Hibs, now undefeated in eight meetings with United, stay ahead of the Tannadice outfit on goal difference.

The Edinburgh side arrived in Tayside on a high after defeating Rangers on Thursday in a penalty shoot-out to progress to the final of the CIS Cup.

United had recorded an impressive 16 points from a potential 18 at home since going down 5-1 to Celtic in November.

Captain Derek McInnes reclaimed his place at the expense of suspended forward Andy McLaren.

Hibs were without banned Scott Brown and Alan Reid, so in came Stephen Dobbie and Steven Whittaker.

Dobbie created the first chance, but his cross into the six-yard box was headed over by strike partner Garry O'Connor.

Derek Riordan twisted free of his marker but was leaning back as he sent his drive over after 16th minute.

United's one threat came four minutes later, when they had a claim for a penalty denied when the ball appeared to strike the hand of defender Colin Murdock.

The home side had been second best for much of the first half but created the best chance yet on the stroke of half-time.

Billy Dodds, deployed as a striker alongside Jim McIntyre, found space at the back post and forced the goalkeeper into a fine save with a powerful volley.

The injured Roland Edge was replaced with Gary Smith in the Hibs defence at the break.

Barry Robson tested Hibs' Daniel Andersson from distance with a brilliant curling shot and thought he had scored up until the last second.

But the goalkeeper managed to get his fingertips to the ball and stop it going into the top corner.

Anderson was the hero again when Miller was clean through but struck the goalkeeper with his effort from the penalty spot when he had the option of setting up Dodds with an easy tap-in.

The goalkeeper's right boot was again on hand to deny Dodds with 12 minutes remaining when the striker had only Anderson to beat.

McIntyre had a great chance from the rebound, but Matt Doumbe deflected the striker's effort wide.

Hibs striker Tam McManus almost sneaked a victory but was denied by the feet of Gallacher in the dying seconds.
