Bank books stay closed
Guillermo Amor (right) joined Livingston
Amor was the most famous name to be signed
Scottish Premier League safes remained largely closed as the January transfer window slammed shut.

Even Celtic and Rangers failed to make any big-money signings as the new financial realities hit hard at all 12 clubs.

Main dealers during January were Livingston, with 11 players coming in and nine leaving.

The last to arrive came hours before the Friday midnight deadline, defender Kelly Berville arriving from French club Nice.

Stephen Thompson has already shown his worth for Rangers

Livi also captured the most famous name, 35-year-old former Barcelona and Spain midfielder Guillermo Amor.

Champions Celtic paid a nominal sum for Livingston's Spanish goalkeeper, Javier Sanchez Broto.

But that was only as cover for the departure of third-choice Jonathan Gould to Preston North End.

Leaders Rangers signed Scotland striker Steven Thompson from Dundee United.

But even that was a cut-price deal because the 24-year-old was out of contract in the summer.

Aberdeen allowed new manager Steve Paterson some cash.

He returned to the First Division, where he was in charge of Inverness Caledonian Thistle, to capture Paul Sheerin from Ayr United, Leigh Hinds from Clyde and Steve Tosh from Falkirk.

But the transfer fees combined failed to top 100,000.

Hard-up Hibernian and Kilmarnock were unable to afford any new signings.
