Dons and Well share the spoils
James McFadden battles with Russell Anderson
Aberdeen and Motherwell fought out a dull draw
Aberdeen 1-1 Motherwell

Aberdeen have now gone nine league games without a win following a dismal draw with bottom of the league Motherwell.

Caretaker manager Gardner Speirs saw the Dons struggle to create chances and Well were unlucky not to take all three points.

Derek Young fired the home side in front but William Kinniburgh levelled with his first goal for the Lanarkshire club.

Aberdeen ended the match holding on with ten men after Kevin Rutkiewicz was dismissed for two bookable offences.

Aberdeen started well and carved open a number of decent chances early in the game.

Derek Young was unlucky not to after eight minutes when his powerful shot was palmed away by Well goalkeeper Francois Dubourdeau.

Motherwell had to wait until the 10th minute for their first chance of the game and it was handed to them on a plate by Dons defender Jamie McAllister.

His slip inside the area allowed Dirk Lehmann the opportunity to shoot from 16 yards, but he leaned too far back and ballooned his effort high over the bar.

The home side grabbed the lead after 29 minutes when Derek Young broke into the visitor's penalty area, waited for Dubourdeau to make a move and calmly slotted the ball past him.

Motherwell tried to muster a comeback but, despite the lively running of James McFadden, could create little in the last third of the pitch.

Early in the second period, McFadden was handed a golden opportunity to score when Russell Anderson missed a long ball from Scott Leith completely, allowing the youngster to sneak in behind him.

The Well striker steadied himself and unleashed a powerful low drive, but it flew inches wide.

The visitors equalised after 59 minutes after another mistake from an Aberdeen player.

Steven Hammell whipped a corner into a packed penalty and keeper David Preece could only flap the ball in the direction of Kinniburgh, who lashed the ball home.

Rutkiewicz was involved in an ugly incident in the 85th minute that resulted in him being issued with his second yellow card of the match.

He scythed down Sean Fagan on the touchline, prompting two Motherwell players to intervene.

A minor fracas ensued before the Dons player was called over by the referee and ordered off.
